I had an idea tonight... What if I put an additional fuel filter between the "foot" on the pick-up and fuel pump? That should help protect the pump from the garbage in the gas that eats one every 80K. Sure it would be a pain to replace every year, but from a cost standpoint - if the pump lasted 200K and the only cost was an o-ring, a filter, and an hour or two of my time every year - it might be worth it.

The question is... would this work? Could the pump handle the restriction of the filter on the pick-up side? Also, should I use a large OEM metal filter or something else? The only other consideration would be if the filter would interfere with the fuel gauge sender...

Extra restriction would mean extra current draw. Probably reduce the pump's life. I thought the pumps failed (or at least got noisy) from corrosion on the internals--the filter won't keep moisture out of the pump.

By the way, Wal-Mart now sells gasoline water remover (four 12 oz bottles) for only $2.14. I keep 16 bottles on the shelf in the garage.

The main reason 2nd and 3rd and 4th pumps fail [get noisey] is from not cleaning out the gas tank during pump replacement, as stuff hides in the corners and bottom cup. Also all rubber hoses should be replaced with a new pump as the inside of hoses decomposes.

Not much you can do or protect against chemical differences in fuel.

Pumps are cheap from Inet/dealers.

I guess that answers my question... I didn't know if it was physical garbage in the gas or chemical issues that ate the pumps. I'll just stick with the usual 80K routine.

Don't you love how the $300.00 FPCU burns out to protect the $0.25 fuse.

Maybe itd be a better idea to install a fuse to the FPCU.....

Doesn't the power routing go:Fuse-FPCU-Pump?
