From the price I can tell you, that "conversion" only includes new valves/oil/gas/dryer (at most). You really need a new condensor as well to accopmlish as new performance.

I once converted a AC going the cheapo route with much reduced performance.

You can still find the old gas, here even pepboys carries it, keeplooking.

Fred...:)

The are no PROS when even a $1500 full conversion will still yield 10% poorer performance.

We can buy all the R12 we want at $650 per 30 pound container [you must be licensed]. You as an non certified individual cannot purchase however cetification is an easy multiple choice test on line.

http://www.epatest.com/ study, pay $19.95, pass it

However once you are certified you are subject to the felony provisions for illegal use/discharge etc.

My local shop, which I asked about 3-6 times to make sure, said they can recharge with R12 for $7/12oz can. Is this possible?

Is it possible for them to charge about half the wholesale cost of the product? Sure. Just not for long. If it's indeed R12, send me their number so I can order about 3000 lbs to sell on Ebay.

I'd be checking for that propane/butane substitute. On the other hand, Spokane is somewhat out of the loop, so maybe they had this old case sitting around for 20 years. Maybe it leaked out already.

Its a rather trustworthy local shop, run by two guys who do mostly performance tuning. Taken a lot of cars there, as do many people I know.

They built their reputation in the racing crowd.

I'll give it a try. If it doesnt work, they're the type of guys who are more than willing to take responsibility for mistakes.

The place is called TranceWorx. 509-928-8688.

That's damn cheap, considering even a cheap compressor costs about that much. These guys must send the money home to some 3rd world country. I can barely get my system recharged for that amount.

I bet that is what "R&R" means. They are flushing the fluids by evacuating the system, replacing the drier (labor only?), and recharging with new refrigerant and lubricant. No new compressor, seals, etc.

I forgot to mention I picked up a used compressor w/o clutch for $80 and a new drier for $56.

Used compressors left open to the atmosphere may have detiorated seals and/or corroded internals. Test first!
