So I had the 240 due for SMOG again this year. I didn't bother with a once over before hand, so I just showed up during a lunch break to Pacific Smog in Seaside, CA. They do a lot of cars in a day and have a relatively quick turnover. Well, my car was in there for a while. More than the typical 15-20 minutes. I was called up to the counter and told my timing is off at nearly 8 degrees advance. :frown: So they went ahead and pulled my TPS plug and fired it up and my idle jumped to 14K RPMs. So they said they fiddled with (I think he said adjusting the TPS, maybe distributor) and couldn't get it right, so they put 'it' back to wherever they found it. They said they can't fix it and that I should fix it and bring it back and handed me my keys. No charge yet. No fail either. They even tried to fix it themselves, but decided against it and sent me on my way. This was awesome in my opinion. They didn't have to do that and they could have charged me $ or failed my car.

So I went home after work, pulled up NICO and refreshed my memory of setting idle and timing. It's great seeing nice pictures of my car and instructions on when and how to tune it. I went to the car armed with a timing light, 10mm socket and a screwdriver. Well, my timing was maybe 10 or 12 degrees according to my light and sure enough, idle was a high 11K with TPS unplugged! That kind of explains the super high idle I experienced after a few runs at and autocross the other weekend. It also kind of explains my lack of power when going around the track later that same weekend. So I started screwing down the IACV and twisting the dizzy and did a bit at a time until it was right. Went for a joyride/ test drive that night (it's a Friday) and all seemed well, though I did have a couple of low idles at stop. So I added a tiny bit more air with the IACV.

The next day, Saturday, I drove it to Pacific Smog again and it was all warmed up by arrival. I double checked my timing and that seemed fine (though it's really hard to see a timing light in broad daylight). I brought in the keys and they pretty much took my car in right away. It seems like they may have cut me in front of about 3 other vehicles, but I don't know the line, I don't work there. They hooked it up, checked everything and the car passed! So I paid my $57 bucks (or so) and was on my way. :shifter:

They don't "pass" your car if you slip them a bill or two, but they don't d!ck you around or overcharge you either. They do help out if they can and they direct you to where to get help if they can't. I like Pacific Smog.

I'm a happy camper and wanted to share. It's partly because Pacific Smog is awesome, NICO Club is awesome and I'm awesome. At least that's how I'm feelin' for now. :dblthumb:

Cool to hear about a positive experience at a shop and that we've still got the answers! And that the old KA can still pass smog all these years later.

Glad you got it sorted out!
I don't remember the last time I had a car smog checked... maybe 2006?

Hmm, every two years here. She's getting up there in miles as well, but I"m not worried. I'm at 247K currently. Most of my KA's are good for near 300K and I expect the same again. This time, however, a race rebuild is in the works. Then I'll be curious if passing smog will be easier or more difficult. We'll see!

Yup, NICO's still got it! The tuning was easy. I remember when it was tough, the timing bouncing all over the place. I thought it was me or my inexperience or the timing light. Turned out I had the biggest vacuum leak ever! Anyway, I liked not having to buy parts to fix my car. Just a little TLC. ;)

I'm messing with you. We don't have smog in Kansas.

I know. ;) I tried to think of clever saving the planet tree hugging responses, or maybe smog is a dragon in the north mountains, but came up with nothing worth typing. Sometimes my desire to be clever outweighs my ability, this is one of those time. :gapteeth:
