First off, this relates to a previous post: Found Vibration...Now What?

The new propeller shaft assembly arrived this afternoon. The first thing I noticed is that the new one is slightly different from the old one. Here is the difference:

Moving along both propeller shaft assemblies (both new and old) from the rear seal on the transmission to the front of the rear differential:

1. Shaft, 5-6", smooth outside - toothed inside, that slides into the rear of the transmission2. Area in question - I'll explain later3. Short propeller shaft, approximately 1' long4. Center support bearing5. U-Joint (this is also where the main propeller shaft bolts to the short propeller shaft6. Main propeller shaft, apploximately 2' long7. U-Joint (this is also where the main propeller shaft bolts to the rear differential)

The only difference between the new and old shaft assemblies lies at point #2 (seen above). On the old shaft there is a 6-pointed, rubber, torsion member located between the front shaft that slides into the transmission and the main body of the short propeller shaft. However, on the new shaft there is a u-joint substituted in place of this rubber, 6-bolt, torsion member.

The entire shaft assembly appears to be able to physically fit...same length, center support bearing in same place, etc. However, I'm wondering, since this is a remanufactured unit, did this actually come out of a 1990 240?

If you've actually read this far and understand what I've attempted to explain (without the aid of a picture)...does this sound like a potential problem or is just a different style, out of a different year, that will work.

I apologize for the confusion of this post,- Dave

Super!:D...no, wait...Crap! :angryfire I've waited a week for this thing...

Next question: what is the purpose of designing the 2 shafts differently...why does a manual require the torsion member and the automatic reqire the u-joint?

Looks like I'll send it back and wait for the correct one.

Thank you for the prompt response K-Car,- Dave
