Jason is a hell of a fabricator.

He and I have worked together for so long on projects, he knows I come up with some good ideas, and I know he can execute those ideas in metal.

Tomorrow, more work on the Z. I'm getting excited to see some real progress.

why not just use the stock R200 bar? or the azc aluminum bar, or the ttt aluminum bar?

Because...

The car came with an R180 and I didn't have a later-model R200 bar...

I'll never buy a thing from AZC...

I'd rather build it than buy it (esp something pricey like the TTT).

lol, dave is an azz but does offer some items that just can't be had elsewhere, and TTT is pretty reasonable and Gabe is a good guy, heck you probably could have talked him into a trade off for promotion, but why not use a 280 R200 mustache bar?

if you were gonna go through the trouble of fabbing a mount I think a z31 mount would be the way to go

That was a 280 bar. It's thicker and wider than the 240 bar.

I wasn't about to pull another diff at a junkyard just to get a damn bar...

This was really no trouble. Took less time to modify it than it would take me to drive to the wrecking yard and back, and it was free.

**UPDATE**

Bella is back! Jason is done with his part of the project so he brought her back home today.

We have been so crazy busy with our other projects that she has been neglected for a while but as soon as the wagon is done, she will be next in line. The critical stuff is complete. The motor and tranny are in and they work. The dash is in, the wiring is done, all the lights work. the rear end is finished. We need to measure for a drive shaft and fix the brakes. We also need to finish the interior, cut the body for flares :ohno: (I will not be present for this step), get tires, and finish up the cosmetics.

Priss decided to give her a bath before we pushed her into the garage.

Time to make a checklist and get started. :dblthumb:

Wow that is a gorgeous Z! It brings back memories of my first car, I had a 77 280Z that was painted a very similar color that my dad restored for me. I still miss that car every day, my mom made me sell it because she thought it was too fast and unfortunately she got her way since I was only 16 :tisk:

I still hunt for one all the time, but have yet to find one anywhere close to me that's not rotting away. Very nice Z though, can't wait to see it when it's finished! :dblthumb:

Unfortunately, we won't be making the trek this year. It's too close to the kid's return to school. Bella wouldn't be finished by then either. We are concentrating on the 411 at the moment so we can take it to JCCS.

Finally got the bumpers back from the chrome shop... I welded up the holes over a year ago. :(

Front air dam fitment is questionable at best, but it looks awfully sexy.

Tomorrow, she gets rear springs / shocks and hopefully brake lines.

Are you making your own brake lines? Also, seeing as how everything is sort of fresh and new, will you be using DOT5 brake fluid?

Kinda - I re-bent a couple of the OEM lines, most were new from Nissan. Need the soft lines to the calipers and then it's ready for fluid (will use cheap DOT5 to test, then flush and fill with ATE Blue).

Cheap DOT5? I can't seem to find any of that, its all like ~$15 for a piss shake of the stuff around here.

OK, a few more updates...

Finally got off my slackass and got the Z up in the air to figure out a few things:

1) Why the hell it sits so high
2) Why the hell the suspension is so stiff
3) Why the hell the camber is all outta whack
4) How the hell I'm gonna run brake lines
5) Why the hell the interior hasn't crawled out of the closets and installed itself...

The suspension issue was first. The team at Tokico has been SO good to us - When I called them to get specs for their lowering springs for the S30, I described our issue. They mentioned it might have S130 springs or perches, and offered to send us a set of CORRECT lowering springs. We graciously accepted, and they arrived in record time.

The install on these isn't too bad - Drop the front strut from the engine bay, lower the control arm assembly, wriggle the spring out, replace and reinstall.

Image

Image

Once we threw the front springs in, it's clear that the previous springs were WAY wrong. It sits PERFECT now:

Image

Suspension stiffness was likely a combination of issues: Too-tall springs with the wrong spring rate, and a function of the badly-blown KYB strut inserts... So, take everything back apart, and I'm off to order those!

Image

That's cool, gives me some time to figure out how I'm gonna attack the brakes.

Toyota 4x4 front calipers, Nissan Maxima rear calipers... Surely I'm gonna need custom brake lines. I had an old tore-up line laying around from a Datsun 521 we parted out. It fit... Holy crap, this is awesome!!!!

As you can see, the rear caliper brake line port places the line at a weird angle, where it would actually hit the axle. So, Becky and I hit the local NAPA, bought a pair of short brake hardlines and a couple female-to-female adapters, and bent them up for the rear brakes:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Did I mention my wife can bend and install brake lines? Be jealous. :naughty:

The soft lines mated up nicely, and will be fine for now - Eventually, she'll get braided SS lines once all the bugs are sorted out.

The interior had been bugging me... An old S30 interior isn't complex, but it's just weird. See, most cars have a full carpeted floorpan. The S30 tunnel is covered in diamond-pattern vinyl, the floorboards are covered by a pair of floor mats, and there's nothing on the firewall, under the seats, or behind the seats.

So, since we no longer have a heater core, a blower motor, or anything else, the firewall was exposed.

First order of business was to cover the entire floor in sound deadening. I like RAAM mat. It's actually the best bang for the buck that I've found, and it's easy to use.

Image

Image

Once that was done, I designed some pieces to cover the firewall, the top of the trans tunnel under the dash, the areas under the seats and behind the seats.

Image

Then, the vinyl went in. Bleh. My least favorite part of the job, because it's SO easy to screw it up.

I had completely restored the seats almost two years ago, and they've been patiently awaiting re-installation.

Here's where she's at now... Hopefully the strut inserts will show up this week, and I get her back down on her wheels...

We're in the home stretch now... More to come, stay tuned!!!

I'm lovin the build.

I think I should cover my interior with that sound deadening stuff too, it gets pretty loud on the road.

Struts JUST arrived - I'm off to the garage!!!!

EDIT: Struts and springs installed, brake M/C connected (had to redrill and relocate the attachment point on the brake lever), and connected the rear axle halfshafts.

Tomorrow morning: Brake fluid, bleed brakes, fill transmission case, pray everything works, and put her back on the ground!

Today, with the help of Aaron (Ace2cool) and Darian (our son), and Becky, after several long hours in the garage...

...Bella ran today under her own power, and Becky got drive her on her maiden voyage.

Her first drive... after almost five years of being disassembled, she's back on the road. It was just a couple loops around the block to make sure nothing fell off, but she sounds awesome, runs strong, and nothing bad happened! :)

I think Bex is happy with how she turned out.
