my setup is very similar to yours -- although my engine is not as fresh -- i have an EGR delete kit sitting on my coffee table -- trying to figure out how to put it on -- and get rid of the AIV's since I am running straight pipes -- i assume you also have a lightened flywheel & upgraded clutch ?? makes a huge difference -- you might also want to look into the NEW ASHspec radiator and electric fan when he said could free up 15-20 hp .. great project !!!!!!!!

somewhere on this forums onelessissue has a 350 hp NA engine for sale -- built from the bottom up -- that is my next bolt on upgrade

Just thought I'd drop in here for a quick update.

The old girl started on Friday afternoon. I have basically been driving it ever since, only taking it down for brief periods of times to install a few goodies that have been waiting for her when she ran again. Pictures later for sure.

I took a trip to the heartbreaker (dyno) today and was not very pleased with the outcome... that was until a few of us tracked down the issue. Needless to say, I feel a little f'ing stupid, but it's all sorted out now. I'll be going back after next week to get some respectable and acurate numbers.

The car actually sounds like butt atm. I'm running headers, test pipes and... factory exhaust with nearly 100k on it. I would say WOT over 5k sounds somewhere inbetween a 4-door Accord with e-bay special exhaust and a dump truck. Hopefully that issue will be remedied before Branson Z Fest, but it just couldn't be helped. The budget for this project has gone _way_ over already and dropping another 7-800 bucks on a catback last week was out of the question.

Either way, I'm happy. I've dropped another ~30lbs on the car and ~26lbs on me since the beginning of this project. The turn-in feels great. It'll be even better tomorrow with some new rubber on the car. I'll try to make some time tomorrow to post some video and pictures of her in her current state after I get back from my Omaha trip to pick up the trophies for Branson Z Fest.

Stay Tuned!

It was just over a grand shipped. All the parts to do 120k service, new pan pickup tube, test pipes, headers, pcv kit, plugs and wiring harness were another ~2k. Total parts just over 3 grand.

Weight Reduction Part 3: I have to go back to the the weigh session for the Megan Racing headers for this one. Driver side was 5 lbs 14 ounces, Passenger was 5lbs 14 ounces as well. Stock Manifold - Driver Side with O2 - 9lbs 7 ounces Stock Manifold - Passenger Side with O2 - 10lbs even EGR - 3lbs 12 ounces So stock exhaust components 23 lbs 3 ounces - Aftermarket 11lbs 12 ounces. Savings 11lbs 7 ounces. I have yet to weigh the difference in test pipe vs mid-pipe with cats, but it's fairly significant. The weight verdict. A little lighter on the gas, and that 3000 number is super close. On the scale with new clear corners.

hi honad

i know you had your engine out to do the work -- mine is still in the car -- i have a EGR delete kit sitting on my coffee table -- i know it is probably not the hard for the mechanically inclined -- i am not -- do you know if there are any write-ups on how to do it ?? PS -- did you delete the AIV system with your straight pipes -- would like to do that also since i have the straight pipes also

thanks

Not really "Technical" or "Part of the Project" but I thought I'd finally throw up some decent pictures of the car.

It's been a while since I've updated this thread. Mostly because I haven't done anything mod wise to the car and have just been enjoying it. She's made it through three autocross events now with no issues and actually has done quite well. I'm still trying to get used to her, but I've managed to walk away with a 3rd (my first autocross with her, and in the rain of all things, the AWD guy in ESP stuck it to me and the 1st place finisher had a dry track) and two 1st place finishes in regional Autocross. Not to bad so far. Divisionals are coming up, we'll see how we fare on a natinoal level of competition there, I'll be attending both the Kansas City and the Tokepa divisional to test my abilities and this car. Here's some photos of the old Slicktop kicking around some cones on a dirty run. It's sort of hard to see in this shot, but the driver side front tire is actually off the ground. Unfortunately, my camera man didn't exactly get that in action, but the corner workers informed me of that awesomeness, I guess I did it every run. Also, I finally got the dyno again. Now that I've gotten all the little bs issues with the car sorted out (I was throwing some codes due to some bad wiring on my detonation sensor and a faulty passenger side O2) things seem to be running fine now. So, the question of the hour is, "In an NA, just how much power does exhaust actually net you over stock?" The answer is 14.5 horsepower and 4.6 lb ft of torque at the tire. Here is my sheet from my three pulls this morning. And the comparison over bone stock. She's a little rich up top. I'm certain I'll get that'll even out with my ECU re-flash. She has a few more ponies up there.

I have been sort of stale lately. I haven't done much, but I've got a little project that I'm working on this weekend.

Nice man nice, I have the same Z, same color just it's not a slicktop. But I have to admit Silver looks really good on a Z.

BTW, where did you buy your engine and does it have the Relocated PTU?

It's been a little while since I've done an update, so I figured we'd go ahead and buy "something" for the car this month so that October could have an update on the slowing Project Slicktop thread. Last night, Megan and I added a JWT Pop charger to the car.

Megan ripping out the stock airbox.

My lightning fast hands putting in the Pop Charger.

And done. Note to self: When I replace the front bumper cover, remove all that air ducting.

We also replaced the ever important hood switch. $15 bucks was well worth the price to not ever have to hear someone ***** about it being torn ever again.

So this morning, I decided to take the car over to MC Racing and have it dyno'd to see if gains are what they should be for this part. Strapping her down.

The final verdict.

Compared to my last dyno, which is a gain of 11.57 whp and 12.52 wtq. Lost a little down low and gained up top, probably not the "best" for Autocross, but good for the track, for sure. Though the car isn't running as rich as it was, it's a little too lean on the low end for my tastes. Should level out when I do ECU, I'd hope.

Compared to stock. 25 whp and 18 tq gain. Not too shabby at all.

yo honad, my Z looks exactly like your except it has no JDM tails and it's a slicktop. Oh and the exhaust. But yo, is your new engine a JDM?

Yes, the "new" engine is from a Japanese Manual.

Awesome thread! I am doing a small amount of weight reduction but nothing like you are doing. Ever thought of replacing all the fluids with royal purple? That should get you a few more ponies on the dyno as well.

Regardless, keep on keepin on!

It's been a while since I've done anything at all, actually. There are a couple modifications on the horizon, but I've mostly just been screwing with my TT the last few months.

Stay Tuned, March should be a bigger month for this thread. The first autocross is March 15th... I've got a ton of crap to do!
