This is my documentation/rebuild about my newly acqiured 89 coupe sohc automatic. totally stock. It is the beginning and not much is done but if i try and wait until its done i know i would forget something.

Right now i am not sure about the direction i want to go with this car, so its mainly just tearing down and fixing the rust. I got it the day after St. Pattys day and ive been trying to work on it as much as i can.

The car has no front end, no back window, no drivers side rear window(well plastic ), the head is off ( overheated and lost interest was the story i got ) and its got rust just about in the worst places possible.

It does, however, have a somewhat clean interior( havent decided if i want to keep it yet so no its not for sale at this time)and tons of potential.

Enjoy and if you have any comments you know what to do

(pics to follow shortly)

PS im parting it out almost everything check classifieds

EDIT: interior is now for sale

dang!!! what i would do is cut out the rust and then if you can get a hold of a TIG or Mig welder then weld a new piece in there the gring do the welds so you can tell and trough some new paint on.

*UPDATE* upon further investigation i found more rust. go figure. Its quite the setback because i dont have a welder... my first thought is to go pick up a cheap 110 welder ( rented garage/ no access to 220) and just go to town. If it turns out bad who cares at least it will be sound right? Most of the rust can be hidden by a body kit ( after its taken care of, of course) Its not gonna be a show car.... probly just a cheap track/drift car thats "street legal"

opinions and thoughts suggested.

I did get the engine ready to be pulled..... still for sale

If it was me i would find a better shell but if you want to learn how to do bodywork and fabrication you have the perfect car!

yeah i thought about throwing in the towel and hold out for a better one but i want a coupe and its hard to come by one.

then again, i also thought about fixing the structual rust and throwin in my new kat and drivin it till it falls apart(hypothetically of course)

Thats pretty much it because the amount of rust that needs fixed in order for it to be roughly back to stock form is outrageous....i mean theres a few spots that dont have rust on them

Ok i got it....... the plan is, im gonna get it drivable and "safe" and put in the kat and drive the hell out of it! eventually it will turn into a "missile"car and i will be one of the cool kids ... but seriously thats my new plan. that way i can get the kinks if any worked out with the kat ( one being downpipe issues ) so once this car is done i will be ready to put the kat into my daily ..

Questions?

P.S. does anyone know a fix to a topmount T3/T4 downpipe hitting the brake lines? I have a mock up of a custom made flange but it still needs alot of work.

That's a big job you got there, but it can be done.

You just need to work on it in small pieces. Get that welder you spoke of, and "go to town", just make sure you take on small sections so that you don't get lost and can't replicate the pieces.

Once you have new metal in an area, make sure you hit it with some Self Etching Primer. Don't use crappy "sandable primer" or it won't protect the new metal. Self Etching is the first thing that should go onto new metal &/or filler.

Good luck man, keep us updated!
