I'm fresh out of the turbo b-series honda scene and I've embarked on a mission of SR20DET madness. I've selected a S13 motor and am looking to getting it freshened up with a full rebuild. So what do I need for 500rwhp? other than obvious tuning, so far I have looked at these parts Greddy Oil Pan and pickup OEM gaskets and bearings ESP eagle rods Wiesco Forged Pistons Tomei 720cc/min injectors AFC T3/T04E bb

Is there something in here I need more to run this type of setup, I mean what is realastic for a SR20DET, is there something I need to do the cylinder walls (hondas don't like over 15psi on stock blocks most of the time). What about adding NOS to a over 20psi motor like this....-James

Well well, you are bout the 5th honda guy this week that came over and first question is how much we think you gonna get out of it. Frankly, results vary from time to time. Sometimes you get a sweet motor that was in good shape, others you may have a bad one. In general stock we don't know the exact numbers that the SR can handle. To start with, NOS is for hondas, leave it at that. Why shoot "NawWwz" when you got power to begin with and to gamble with the motor? Well your number said 500hp so lets start shall we? First off you might get better results searching. I'm not a newb hater so I won't ***** at you like the rest of them here. You will need:

Upgraded Fuel Delivery:Injectors, Fuel Pump

Upgraded Bottom End:Well word has it that the bottom end cant handle more then 450 but some have proved it wrong. To play it safe start building the bottom end and not gamble. Pistons and Rods will do good mainly. The strenth of the stock crankshaft is unknown as of "limits".

The Bolt-Ons:Now that you have the heart of the motor fixed up and more then enough fuel surging through, it's time to work up the goodies. Start off with an Intercooler and headgasket. Not only does this look good, but it keeps you from blowing up your investment through hot intake charge and overboost. Next, get a nice turbo kit of your choice. Remember, the bigger it is, the more lag you get. After you think it's all over, you might want to consider some valve springs and definitely a performance ecu, AFC, or standalone to control all the big mods. Also, you would want to consider other electronic goodies such as boost controller etc. When you get all this down, do yourself a favor and get a flywheel and clutch before you burn that stock one with all the extra power you get. Well that's all for now, HAPPY BOOSTING!

You'll need a fully built head as well, and a resleeved block. You're looking at about 15,000 dollars.

If you going to resleeve, might as well go all out. Go stroker kits!

Damn 15,000grand to push that kinda power???? i should have stayed with the honda. I know a bunch of honda owners putting out 450hp with not to much money (6-8grand). But then there just honda and have no street traction. so thats why i sold mine.heres a good artical on a guy who put down over 500hp on a b16 that had a good bit of work.this also proves the wholoe honda dont have torque thing that comes up all the time. however the power band is not that usefull unless your a drag racerhttp://forums.clubsi.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB12&Number=1428856&Forum=UBB12&Words=goal&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=1392643 ill never diss the nissan cause i love mine, i just hope i can pull good power for a good price. should be fun!

you can safely and reliably run 350rwhp for about 8-10 grand dependant upon components. I always say 350rwhp is the threshold, you can technically go higher but theres no telling how reliable your engine will be, there are people pushing 400rwhp on a stock engine but its not especially safe. Above 350 you start having problems with rocker arms bursting off and what not, the whole head has to be done up, internals, and sleeves because thats pretty much the point everything starts to go, if you want to push 500rwhp for a day you're more than welcome to but your engine will blow up. If you want to have it reliably run, you're looking at a lot of money and a standalone, I wouldn't suggest the s-afc for that much power. You can push 350rwhp pretty easy without doing much internally, I woudl suggest a metal headgasket, but its not necessary, however for that kind of money I think you'd want one. Also, the two price figures I have give you include the cost of the engine. Enjoy your day!

Interesting..... Well I guess 450rwhp is something I can shot for.The primary reason I switched from the B16 to SR20DET is mainly the ability to make power with out having to have a racing motor, ie selvees and stand alone and everything else under the sun.So my next question is how does one go about getting the reselveeing going. The enjuku kit has an advertised 393rwhp, does anybody know the specifics of the kit and what they are using to get tha tout of a stock motor? Lastly how much cylinder pressure can these babies take, I had a pretty good idea how much my B16 could make so I ran it up near the edge. Thanks for the help-James

yeah i hear what your saying, my b16 was the same way. i could rape a new camaro of the line and on the highway but let him catch me with my revs lover than 5000rpm and im done. Pluss after driving my boys eclipse gst the whole having torque at under 2 grand was really fun. It felt much more like a muscle car than a race car. And for my civic, to go fast around town and such i had to be at high rpms. And then the second the boost kicked in i would be at the top of the gear and speeding. Not saying i race in town. but try passing a car when your civic goes from 150hp at 5000rpm to 240hp at 6000rpm. its just not mcuh of a street car. sure i could have a smaller turbo that would make a broader power band but then it wont put out half as much topend power. due to the little b16's displacment.Pluss the drifting sounds like real fun. and drifting a FWD car just looks gay.

one thing you got to remember buddy, is no matter how much you put into that honda, at the end of the day when you park that car in your garage its STILL A HONDA (and chances are a civic). At least when you park your 20k 240sx you'll say to yourself, "**** at least its not a honda"

One other thing I noticed you say, to be making that kind of power you won't be on boost until like 4500+ RPMs, you'll be driving a drag car. At 320-350rwhp with a properly sized turbo you can hit boost at like 3000-3300.

this will be my 4th nissan, I have had a 91 pickup that i ran to 275,000miles so i know about the price of parts. I also have had a 96 nissan pickup, a 96 nissan altima and a 91 300zx NA (pos, so damn heavy without a turbo has to be the slowest looking fast car since the 3000gt SL). But thanks for the welcomes. I got 2 thousand more out for my civic when i parted it out and sold it than i had into it. so im doing good so far. Gotta love honda's resale value! Just like you said everyone has one or wants one. Thanks fast and the furious!

Yeah I'm not too worried about the spool up being on at ~4000-4500 I'm going to roll that just fine, I want a nissan to crush my old cars potential, that is one of the reasons for the switch, a nissan can make good power with stock motors, I found the honda limit to be between 270-300whp and after that you need some serious money....With a curb weight of about 2850lbs I can do some serious damage and I'm looking for what is definitely required, like the stock block itself can take what kinda boost pressure and if I'm pushing 450whp I'm on the edge of the stock block parts with forged pistons and rods.-James

Low 20s is about the limit for boost, if you're pushing 450rwhp you're going to blow up everything eventually, and eventually could be 1 day or somehow miraculously 1 year, but most likely closer to 1 month. Nissans come with forged rods from the factory just for reference. Also, the limit of the SR20 is going to be about 350rwhp for a daily driver, you can push 400rwhp on stock components as I said before but you WILL blow up, its not a maybe, its not a push to the edge, its a you will blow up. : ) Truly, if you're going to use this as a daily driver you may wish to look into staying at around 350rwhp for safety sake, if you really want to push 400rwhp or 450rwhp more power to you I guess, but its not as simple as replacing the pistons. If you want an engine that can do that, you should look into the CA18DET, its rods, crank, and head are good for 500 bhp or so, all you need to do is replace the pistons and head gasket, however I would replace the pistons, rods, balance the crank and put in a metal headgasket. However, its only a 1.8 liter so you'd be back in honda land. The plus side is with those changes you can rev to 9k so making boost in the 4000s isn't so bad. However, whatever you want to do is fine, its your money. : )

yep....you'd be best off going back to the honda camp. nissans are slow, and dont make good motors...they dont even have VTEC, i mean..god...pssshhhh...

no...

Honda parts ARE cheap. You just have to know what your doing and how to shop for them.

Yes. 350 parts are cheap. But if you want to do a real buildup on a chevy... then your going to end up pooring more money into it than these sweet little japanese cars require. You'll just have to trust me on this one.

I'm getting a 240sx for several reasons. rwd, vlsd, easy turbo replacement motor, and it's cheaper than a rotary buildup. But Honda's will always be in my soul because they are commuter cars, with high reliablity, cheap parts to purchase, and you can make the pretty quick, pretty cheap.

Thanks,Charles Weller
