I'm working on taking the 280ZX Turbo motor out of the 83'280zx with 5spd and putting it in a 240Z (once i find a good body) Thought about the 260Z whats the real diffrence between the two? Bumpers? Sorry I'm new to the older Z's.I plan on upgrading just about everything. I'm going to have the motor rebuilt with low compression pistons and learning more about the ccrank shaft and stuff. Any suggestions are welcomed. Also what should I do about the turbo (the Garret AIResearch T3)? Should i keep it and rebuild (for now) or should I replace it, and any suggestions on the turbo replacement? I'm hoping to get about 450-500hp to the wheels from this build. Thanks for any suggestions.

Also anyone know of a 240Z in texas or 260Z, let me know.

Sorry this was just cool,lol:jet:

I'm doing the exact same thing. I already have my 240z body, though...I"m just looking for an 81-83 280zxt. One question, though. I've been told that on 1983 Turbo 280zx's, the engine uses hydraulic valve lifters instead of standard rocker arms, producing a much quieter engine. However...apparently they're a ***** to rebuild? Let me know if 1) that's true, and 2) there are replacements for the "hydraulic valve lifters," because I'd love a quiet engine, but don't want a quiet engine that I can't rebuild. Keep in touch, we'll help each other through the swap. For me...race pistons, new cam, machine and rebuild the entire block/head, but I'm keeping everything stock for now. For now =D

Hey Guys,

The info you are looking for is available at http://www.hybridz.org done by guys that have completed the swaps.

OBTW, the hydraulic lifter heads were in some (not all) '82 and '83 turbo ZXs. It is marked P90A near #1 plug hole. It is definitly quieter than the standard (P90) head. However, it is not as tweakable. Again, check with hybridz.

I've been trying to figure out what a good compression is to run on the motor. Like I said I'm hoping for 400-500hp to the wheels. And haveing a decent reliable car. Looking at T3/T4 turbo upgrade. What intercooler fits? Other wise I was gonna have Spearco build one for me. I'm gonna start working with SPL parts in Austin for this project. Hoping to have it running and in good shape by this summer. But gotta get the funds.

I was thinking about a 8.5:1 compression for the motor? What do you think?

here is the turbo that was recommended by Majestic Turbo in Waco, TXKevin the tech guy I called said that a T3/T04E Hybrid with either a 57 or 60 trim with the Stage 3 (ahh **** forgot, lol. I'll get back to you on that) would spoll nicely and hold the 500hp goal that i'm shooting for. He also said that I'd wanna do a air to water set up

I'm looking for a light weight flywheel for the 1983 280zx turbo motor with the 5spd. Does anyone know where to get one?

If you guys are serious about doing these swaps, you need to think about a few things. The early Zcar, especially the 240, will require some serious body reinforcements if you go above 300 hp. The unibody for these cars is 1960's technology and the sheet metal is THIN, THIN, THIN! The first SBC swap I did (about 320 hp) twisted the body so badly had to junk it. The very FIRST time I got on it, the passenger door popped open and would not reshut. I ended up with cracks in the C pillars, the hatch opening so out of shape the hatch wouldn't fit, and the differential mount twisted 10 degrees out of alignment. (it took about 2 months to do this)

500 hp (if you could do it) would require a full tube frame.

Take a look at hybridz.org and check out some of their reinforcing schemes.

I've been there. Broken Zcars are sad things.

Yea I've already taken that into consideration. Mr. Vorenkamp who is my referance of reinforcing has done a 454 into a 240z that he made into a convertible. So i've got that downi'm planning on roll cage a frame connectors anyway. right now i'm trying to find some place that can cryo treat parts. Mainly for the transmission.
