I started in on the massive bolt on project today. Give you guys a day by day on how it all went, hopefully this will help the newer guys getting stuff done the right way too.

The only things I really need to get 300 crank HP is a cat, exhaust, radiator, and electrical fans, and I am done!!

Day 1--------

Talked with Jon (Slw240sx) last week about taking off my turbo and manifold and fitting up his SSautochrome header to see how well it fit. So today I parked the car in the garage and got cracking. Got the intake off, charge pipe off, BOV off, and also the downpipe for you John. That will be sent out on Monday. You will need a new gasket from the downpipe to the cat. They are like 3 bucks at AutoZone and you can cut it out to 3 inches, very simple. My HKS downpipe didn't come with a new one, so I have to reuse this one. I did include a new gasket from the o2 housing to downpipe since I got one with the downpipe and one with the o2 housing, so that is yours!

It was a major ***** getting the downpipe off. Heat has seized the nuts onto the studs, so I busted out the impact and they came right off. Kinda stared at the motor for a while trying to plan an attack for it. After staring at it for awhile, there is no possible way I can get the turbo and manifold off tonight. It was just way too involved, taking off the oil lines, coolant lines, and trying to get up under manifold and getting the bottom nuts off. If anyone has a good way of getting to them, let me know or else the fitting project is dead in the water.

After wrestling with the manifold bolts for awhile I got frustrated with them not budging so I just soaked them in WD40 and when onto something else.

Went inside the car and got the boost gauge and EGT gauge into the pod on the A-pillar. Also installed the Turbo Timer. And installed the shift knob, whew..... that was the hardest part :rolleyes

Played a little SOCOM2, then got tired. And stopped for the night. I get home and come to find out, the beater I am driving has to be jump started every time I drive it. Probably crappy alternator, the S14 has a leaky waterpump, and the old lady's mom's car has a crapped out clutch master cylinder. Why does everything else break when trying to work on 1 car?

So I have my plate full for tomorrow. Fix the beater. Fix the S14. Fix the wife's mom's car. Then start in on mine.

Tomorrow is a fun filled day of draining fluids, getting harnesses off, taking out the intercooler and radiator. Hopefully it will be ready to be pulled tomorrow night. Then vacation starts and I have 9 consecutive days to get this banged out.

Updates to come! With pics!

Also Jon, if you are reading this. If you can burn me a stock program, you can have my ECU anytime. And I will trade you manifolds with the EGT bung already in it. Call me if you still want to come down tomorrow. Probably won't be working on it until 7 or so.

i noticed you have 450 injectors on the list. is that plenty for 300hp or is that pushin it? cause i have a set of 450 currently but i have an oppurtunity to buy a set of almost brand new denso 550s for $150 but if 550s are overkill then i'll stick with the 450s. good luck with the cars.

Wooo :)

Luckilly the (albeit only) gasket that stayed intact out of either motor was one of the o2 housing to turbo gaskets.. which since I took the o2 housings off the turbos, I'd need to put back on..

I have a metal OE gasket I might be able to reuse on my car from the hotshot to the cat but I doubt its 3".. but 3" standard issue gaskets are no problem :)

On both my motors to get the turbos/manifolds off I took off the oil outlet (easy), water outlet (not as easy, but not too bad), then unbolted the far end of the oil inlet and water inlet pipes from their respective locations, unbolted the manifold (backing out 3/4 of the studs on one motor! whee! not fun! slow! painful!) ... the hardest part was the two furthest back lower nuts/bolts/whatever ... you just hve to get at them with a wrench.. and I haven't any gearwrenches.

sounds like what happens to me when we try working on my car

the manifold is a sinch to get off , the hard part is getting it back on. and i have a trick to getting the runner 3and4 bottome bolts off. if i can do it no problemn i know you can you got way skinnier wrists and arms, long fingers and being double jointed kinda helps, but shouldnt take too long. i primarly used sockets on the top ones and either racheting spanners or the line wrenchs on the bottom and you have to take the coolant lines out first.

i probably wont wake up till around 2pm since im just now getting in its like 7am, anyhow, if you dont here from me by 3 call me around 5 and ill let you know whats happening, i need to come down. around 6 or 7 will be best cause then i can get a car, mines screwd ill get some close ups of the structal carnage.

those 550s for 150$ , if you pass ill take them , hell illget you some 440 or 450s for trade and cash!

well that's the thing. i've already got 450s. i'm just curious to know if they'll be enough for 300hp or a little more.

450's should be ok for 300 crank. Won't be enough for 300 wheel.

Cuzano just laid 277 on 550's.

Update!!!

Started to work on it again today. Jon came down and we fitted up the SSAutochrome header and his MASSIVE GT25R. Here is where we stand....

Pretty much got everything that needs to come off the motor to pull it off. Coolant is drained, harness pulled through the fire wall and laying on the motor, fuel lines are undone, motor mounts are unbolted, transmission mount is unbolted. Only thing left to do is pull the shifter, remove rear coolant lines, and pull it.

I got all that done then Jon and Robin showed up. He whipped out the manifold and the ungodly huge GT25R and wanted to mock it up, said he could have the manifold off in 20 minutes tops. We got the top bolts undone easily and the two bolts on the bottom side out too, then moved onto the two near the rear of the motor. Well..... after just deciding I didnt' need the stock hard lines for the coolant and oil feed we just cut them off to get some clearance to get to the rear bolts. And by god we had that manifold off in under a half hour.

First we bolted his GT25R up to the SSautocrome manifold and slid it onto the motor. Welp, problem number one..... the compressor hits the motor mount. There are only 2 possible ways around this, making a custom motor mount which uses the A/C bracket holes or cutting the motor mount in half. We decided it is absolutely retarded to make custom mounts to run a 200 dollar manifold, so more than likely he is going to have to get a top mount. We took the SS header, flipped it around and mocked up a top mount, and that GT25R looks mean as hell top mounted. So the GT25R will work, but you will have to do some major modification to the motor mount to get it in there, I cannot stress enough how huge this thing is. I took some pictures of it, but left the camera at the garage, they will be posted tomorrow night.

Then it came to my turbos turn. I thought the T28 was kinda big, but I was having serious problems getting over how big that GT25R was, so my T28 just started to look a bit puny. I bolted it up to the SS manifold and then I also installed the Megan Racing o2 housing I bought from ebay. Bolted it to the motor, busted out the HKS downpipe and it all fit together very nicely. So everything should be rockin' when it all goes back together.

Jon had also brought me a new back half to his old turbo that seized up to take care of the broken stud problem in my T28. First thing we noticed, my T28 does not have the wastegate divider wall in it, his housing does though, so I guess we found out that he was actually running an S15 turbo and not an S14 like he thought. Or that my turbo was not truly a ball bearing T28, but I have checked the numbers on the center section and they match to T28 bb turbos. Kinda odd.

Well.... we got 5 of the 6 bolts off the backhalf, and one of them was just being plain stubborn. After weighing our options and deciding that this back half was junk anyway we just cut the head off the bolt that was stuck..... problem number two of the night... THE DAMN HOUSING WILL NOT COME OFF THE TURBO!!! We pried, pulled, banged, turned, everything, this thing will not budge. It was getting kinda late and the old lady called twice wanting to know when I was coming home, so we decided to call it a night. I soaked the backhalf in some WD40 and let it sit for the night. Hopefully when I get back to work on it tomorrow it will bust loose, if not, I am in some serious trouble since I've about destroyed the S14 backhalf that is on it.

So as it stands, the motor will be out tomorrow and on the stand. I should be able to get the mounts off and get them filled with urethane. Get the flywheel off and get it machined down. Get the fuel injectors in. Get the harness reworked, I want to get back and solder all my butt connectors and reshrink wrap it. Basically have it all ready to go for Tuesday and have it back in the car.

Pics to come tomorrow!

yep we had a productive yet disapointing day. my SS manifold will be up for sale unless i can get a differnt motor mount to work. or i can trim it to fit , im goin to hop over to the SR forums for the next few hours and see what i can learn, that turbo is huge under there! tha manifold would have come off sooner but we had only a few selections when it came to the wrenchs but it workd and i only cut my self up minorly this time.

i like that megan O2 senor housing and ill prob pick one up fit great, only if i go with a top mount ill have to make a custom DP to use it. im not too worried at worst case ill have to spend some more money and get that top mount manifold made no huge setbacks just more of a finanical burden at this point .i was goin to get fivelugs and lsd this week but i may just put it off now

it got me in the mood to get my car running

Secret Service trims the motor mount to fit the GT25R, they did it to my friends car and they did it to a few others. Not only them but ive seen a few other shops trim the mount down as well. You dont have to trim it much. Theres pics floating around in the SR section of how much to cut.

Hey, as far as the cast divider on the exhaust side goes, that was ONLY on the S15 turbo. The S14 was still a BB unit, but it didn't have that divider on it. The S15 also has an inconel treatment to the exhaust blades. Otherwise they are the same turbo.

i think the SS mani and the CA motor sitt the turbo closer to the mount cause im goin to have to take of about a square inch or more of it to get the housing in there. im gonna try it i guess lol

i hve marks on the turbo where the mount rubs its almost tha whole bottom of the comp housing .

The problem with it is the SR sits a bit more upright, while the CA has a gangsta lean to it. Since it leans down a bit more, the turbo hangs a bit lower and more of the mount needs to be taken out.

maybe if we put some spacers on the mount to try and level it all out, who knows we will come up with somthing!
