I have a liftmaster 8500 and trying to program the homelink buttons in my G37S 2009. I followed the car manual, i.e. reset all the homelink buttons first. Then take the remote about 1-3 inches to the homelink buttons and press both the remote button and the homelink button that I want to program. The right light starts blinking slowly but then after about 45s stops blinking. There is no fast blinking, not even for 2s which would have indicated a rolling code. It just stops. When I then press the homelink button that I tried to program it just blinks red. I assume that means it hasn't been programmed. Why is this not working? Is there something special about the Liftmaster 8500 (it's one that has myQ).

Did you check/or call Homelink?

I don't believe your vehicle is Homelink compatible with your new Liftmaster?

Download the MyQ App to your IPhone and open your garage door from your phone

According to that website my 2019 G37 doesn't have Homelink. However, the manual clearly mentions Homelink (see attachment) and the symbols on the mirror are also the Homelink symbols. Or are there different and incompatible versions of Homelink?

For cars with Homelink mirrors available as a factory option, they're always available as an add-on as well. If the database shows your car didn't come with it, chances are it was a dealer or post-sale installation. It should be the same mirror either way, the only general difference between the factory and add-on versions is the wiring.

Then maybe it was an add-on option as it is mentioned in the manual. So this should work. Do you have any idea why it doesn't? What causes the red light not to start blinking fast (not even for 2s indicating a rolling code)? I followed the instructions to the dot. The remote that I am using for programming works.

When you "program" a Homelink you're actually teaching it to read and "clone" the signals from your remote. When they refuse to program, it generally means the fob is using a frequency or signal format which the mirror doesn't recognize. There are a lot of "secure" openers around today that are markedly different from what was around in 2009, so it may just be that your Liftmaster uses an incompatible signal structure. My understanding is that a lot of the newer openers with proprietary formats can also be configured for legacy ones, so you may need to crack the Liftmaster manual to find out what it supports and whether you can put it in a mode the Homelink can use.

The Liftmaster 8500 manual doesn't mention anything about a "legacy" mode. However, they do say that if the linking doesn't work then buy a repeater. Maybe the repeater supports older Homelink implementations. The manual also mentions "Security+ 2.0" so I think your guess about newer versions of Homelink not being compatible with what I have on my 2009 G37 is correct. Oh well, I guess I will just use the remote that came with the garage door opener.

Times are indeed changing. Some auto manufacturers are not even including Homelink as standard equipment.
My Tesla that is on order does not come with Homelink. It is a $325 option.
Not everyone needs it if you do not have a garage or a gate that needs to open. Elon Musk decided to eliminate it to reduce costs. He also eliminated Sirius/XM as not everyone wants to pay for it.
I can open my Liftmaster from my phone whether I am in my driveway or in another state.Amazon deliveries can also open it for deliveries and then close it.
No longer are packages left on my porch.
Perhaps its time for you to upgrade to a newer vehicle with front and rear backup cameras, blind spot warning and many other safety features?

I can also open the garage door through my phone, even via voice command on the phone and at home, and Amazon also delivers everything into the garage. Having said that, it's a whole lot easier to press a button on the mirror than having to pull out my phone. And using the remote that came with the garage door opener is a LOT cheaper than buying a new car. Besides, I like my G37S. And the Q50 doesn't even offer wireless Android Auto.
