A few drops of power steering fluid drip out of the passenger side end of the power steering rack on my 1994 Infiniti J30T, and the rubber bellows is also torn. I don't know if the leak caused the bellows to tear or the tear introduced dirt which made the seal leak, but anyway I have to refill the power steering reservoir about once every month or two when the HICAS warning light comes on indicatng low fluid level. I see what looks like a large hex nut on the end of the rack, and don't know if removing it would let me replace the seal.. I also see a seal kit is available for the rack. My question is can a do it yourselfer replace the seal without removing the rack from the car. I don't want to buy a rebuilt rack when mine is fine except for the torn boot and leaking seal on one end.I know someone posted an FSM link on one of the forums, but when I access it it is zipped and I would need to buy a winzip unzip program for $29 to read it. Anyone know of a link to an unzipped factory service manual, or has anyone ever replaced the seal themselves and can you do it without special tools or skills? I can buy a new rubber bellows from Rock auto for $13.28 but would like to fix the seal too if its something I could do.

Here is a free program to unzip http://www.izarc.org/download.html

The procedure in the FSM for replacing the seal is all done on a benchwith heat and a drill required. if you can not get it unzipped LMK and I will email you the steering chapter in a self extracting zip file.

Thanks for the reply and link. I found a procedure for a 300ZX which might use the same steering rack as the J30. There are several seals, and the one that requires drilling and a heat gun I hope isn't the seal I want to replace.. But anyway heres a link to a 300ZX service manual. Click on page numbers to advance to the next page, or use the index. I will try to push the boot back tomorrow and see if it looks the same as the 300ZX rack.http://300zx.co.uk/cgi-bin/manual.cgi
