Over the last several weeks, I have noticed my tire pressure guages have ALL been going down. Today they hit 27 lbs. and I got an alarm on one of them. They all register at 27 or 28 lbs. It has started to get chilly here in Minnesota, but they went through last winter without a problem.

I am do to drive on a long trip starting Friday. Any suggestions?

Buy a digital tire pressure gauge. $10-$20 at an auto store or mega mart. Use that as your reference for the trip. Don't inflate beyond 40 psi.

you should inflate your tires ay 72f. at 32/psi, for every 10f colder you loose 1/psi. and vice versa when hot. the rule of thumb is get your tires in operating temp and put at least 36/psi. that is what i do.

It is normal for tires to drop 1 to 2 psi per week or two. Even if the weather does not change perceptibly. It is more than that for weather changes.

I would strongly recommend getting a good tire pressure gauge (analog or digital ... I have a very accurate resolution 0.1psi gauge from Accutire, but this is overkill) and check your pressure every week (during weather changes) to every other week (when the weather is relatively unchanging). The car TPMS should be treated as a measure for avoiding dangerous low levels only - "red light" functionality, even though you do get readings!

Remember to measure the pressure cold, in your garage, before the sun hits the tire in the morning, (meeting these objectives within reason, of course ) and adjust the pressure to all the correct values on all tires.

BTW, somewhere near 36psi +/- 1 or 2 psi is the right range for almost every tire I can think of, for our M's! This allows for gauge inaccuracy (particularly important for low aspect-ratio tires), a normal drop during the week to stay safe, normal wear and tear, etc., etc., etc.

Cold weather will cause the pressure to drop. My tires on my 03 M45 are typically at 34psi for all my wheels. I noticed my sensor come on when the temperature here in Austin, Texas dropped from 75-ish to the low 50's/upper 40's. I simply inflated and the alarm and notification went off.

Give it time as it checks each tire it seems to verify that it is indeed not flat. Drive it around for a coupla minutes after inflation and the TPMS will update all tires and you'll be good to go.

I have had a problem over the last few weeks with my TPMS.

It started with a flat (Dont ask), put the spare on and went on my way.

The warning light stayed on, and the pressures for all read "**" and the "flat" was still highlighted.

Waited it out and a week later all the pressures numbers appeared but the flat was only reading 2psi, checked it and it was at 34 on a quality gauge.

Yesterday took off for work and the warning tone sounded and all pressures read "**" with the original flat still highlighted.

75 miles later, with good pressure in all, it get the tone 5 minutes after start up, and all dash readings are ** and the warning light (little flat tire on gauge cluster) has stayed on?

ANYONE have any ideas for this one?

Thanks

This is a very common problem and one that has plagued me since I bought my used M45 6 months ago. The same ** readouts, which don't even tell you which tire is supposedly low for one thing. The nproblem is really a faulty sensor and I imagine would have to be serviced at the dealer to be resolved? I plan on seeing about having it addresses when I purchase new tires.

I get the monotine beep indicator as well here and there, and that is annoying too!

Well,

The new tires are on the way from Tire Rack.com (Dunlop Sport max, anyone have any complaints about them?).

I guess I will head to the dealer to discuss the sensor issue when they get here. Hope that is all it is.

About this battery thing, is it a sensor battery, or is it in the dash, just trying to prepare myself. My dealer has been great, consumption, issues, end link issues, etc. But my warranty ran out 1k ago and I didn't realize it till now. Guess the extended warranty is on the birthday list as well!
