http://www.girardgibbs.com/dexcool.html

this is an attorney site with a litigation ongoing with customers who have had problems with DEX-COOL. i know DEX-COOL was recommended here before and i did a complete flush and fill with it along with distilled water and water wetter. someone posted somewhere that there could be sludge problems but only if mixed with other anti-freezes. i know prestone has a new product that says it can be mixed with ANY anti-freeze, so,,,do they know something?????? i used this new product to top off the Q recently when i had a bad radiator cap that was leaking fluid. wondering if i should do a complete flush and get rid of Dex-Cool completely. any thoughts???

That stuff sludges up even when mixed perfect. Total garbage. My GTP's coolant looked like mud. Get rid of it.

Don't remember it being recommended here. Only a switch to OAT coolant along with Water Wetter.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with Dexcool. The problem is the with how GM's coolant passages and intakes are designed. You're not supposed to mix it with green stuff either, or else it sludges up.

It sludges up without mixing it. It's garbage. I drained it and filled with the green stuff.

Did you flush before switching to dexcool? The same procedure is required for switching to Nissan orange too.

I dont understand what the point of it is..... Just use regular coolant and drain/refill rad once per year.

the reason why i even looked into this at all was i was planning on doing a flush with my bmw and was told to get bmw coolent. it's pretty expensive and when asked why, was told it was phosphate free (and something else i forget). the only anti-freeze on the shelf at autozone that was phosphate free was the dex-cool. did a quick search and found the above site. if i remember correctly, i think fred recommended the dex-cool. maybe i should just get rid of it......................

There is nothing wrong with dexcool.

If anything it offers lots of advantages.Anecdotes to the contaryn onewithstanding.

If you dont <totally> flush out the old stuff, you may have problems.

A recent formulation change is supposed to address even that issue, but I dont have it researched enough, to address that here, so I'd still say flush <well>.
