I have been having problems with the climate control in my 90 Q. It started last summer, the a/c would stop and the display would go dark. You could stop the car and cut off the ignition and let it sit for a few minutes and it would come back on upon restart. Sometimes it would stay on and never cut off sometimes it would cut off again. Then for a period of several months there were no problems. A few weeks ago one morning it would not come on at all. After several days of no heat. I replaced it with a used unit and cleaned all contacts. The replacement worked for 24 hours. Now it comes on upon start up but cuts off after 5 minutes. After re start it will come on for another 5 minutes and cut off. Anyone have any ideas on this?

Common failure mode for the display to overheat and blank out or not come on at all. A solder joint opens and the voltage drops. Turning off allows the connection to re-form until the next time of failure.

Buying used is always a gamble since as far as I know every 90-91 suffered from this eventually after enough hours of use...........most lasted to 100k or 7 years.................lots of the bad units made their way to auctions.

The factory replacements [$500+] seems to last longer as my replacement has almost 200k on it.

Try a few other used units eventually you'll get lucky.

He can repair the display. Not sure about your other problems, but I would bet your Darlington resistor is next to fail due to worn out fan motor causing too much current drain.

Search under Darlington.
