My car will die when I get off the highway or when it is in gear for a while. Then it won't start again for about 20 minutes. Someone told me it may be the fuel pump. I know it has to be part of the fuel system. Could someone knowegable tell me what they think is going on or where the fuel pump is so I can fix this annoying problem. Also, it idles between about 850 and 1500rpm depending on what it wants to idle at. any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a ka24e by the way.

Your fuel pump is in the trunk of the car on the side where your fuel tank is. Try banging on the cover of it and if your car improves, it's most likely your fuel pump. You could have some gunk plugging it up. Check your fuel filter, too. It'seasy to replace the fuel pump but a brand new one is pricy. Cost me $450 CA new.

Mine dies when I get off the highway too. Is your's a manual? When it dies, take it out of gear hold the clutch in and turn the key. Hold the key and quickly let the clutch in and out. I know it sounds crazy, but it seems to work.

if you need a new fuel pump just go with a Walbro 255lph one. It's a little louder since it flows more than stock but it's also only about 100 shipped.

The only thing you may want to know about the 255lph one, because it pumps more, you are gonna be running hella richer. One other forum member did this prior to his turbo upgrade and didn't have a safc to controller it, and said he was running hellllla rich.

They work good tho. And even then, you can get a walbro & safc for less than an oem pump .

it's not necesarily a fuel pump problem guys..

if it dies when getting out of gear and dropping it in neutral.. then it doesn't have to do with fuel delivery.

it looks like it's stalling when decelerating and dropping to neutral.

i bet your idle drops from 3,000RPM to 500RPM really really fast right? it's supposed to drop straight to idle and hold still without going under idle normally.

if he was staying in 5th gear and pushing gas, with the car hesitating to accelerate or losing speed with foot on gas, then it would make sense for it to be a possible fuel delivery (fuel pump or something else) problem

but it looks like he's having his idle dip and fluctuate. same problem i have (except everybody's idle dips and fluctuates differently )

there's actually another thread on this on this same Technical board just a few posts down.

Anyways, I'll get straight to the point.. check your IACV.how?- If you can start the car with the gas pedal HELD DOWN ALL THE WAY, then something's wrong with your IACV (Auxiliary Air Control part)

- While car is idling, check if the engine speed drops when squeezing/pinching the hose that goes to the IACV. If it does not drop, then something's wrong with it (specifically the Air Regulator Valve part of the IACV).

You should take that part out and clean it thoroughly. (clean the intake manifold/throttle body/throttle plate while they're out too. you have to remove the intake manifold to access the IACV on SOHC KA's.)

look up on how to remove the intake manifold and make sure you get a new intake manifold gasket when putting it back on after getting everything cleaned/replaced (hopefully you won't have to replace your IACV).

Good luck.
