Obvioulsy a gas leak - FIRE HAZARD! I'm not familiar with the 92 Maxima but most likely, you have a fuel filter near the firewall, driver side. Follow the fuel line and look for cracks/loose connections. You probably need an engine clean so you can trace the sourCE of oil leak.

Gas smell is very common on VG30E powered cars. Common on Z31s and M30s as well. I had problems with it in my '93 Max. Most likely, you've got a cracked fuel line somewhere. The rubber lines used on our cars are notorious for becoming brittle with age and oxidation and, once they become brittle, temperature change causes cracks which lead to the fuel smell. I was never able to track down WHICH line was leaky or cracked on my Max, but I also never found a drop of gasoline in the engine bay. Keep an eye out for leaking gasoline since as Loystock said you could be facing a fire hazard. But if you can't find the leaky line, you might have to just start replacing them. Start at the fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter and work your way down the line. It's also possible it's a hose joint that's leaking rather than a crack. Might as well replace the fuel filter while you're in there: it's dirt cheap and easy to do.

Yes you will get the gas smell sometimes. I got in infrequently with both the
95 and 98-never saw gas leaking. I think it might be caused when the o rings
to the fuel injectors shrink due to cold weather temperature changes. After the
engine warmed up the smell would go away.

+1 common with VG powerplants even the TT/NA Z32 has the issue.
