So I have a 1992 240 (auto) and I am having problems with the overdrive not turning on. The car used to shift at about 3grand before but now it takes a higher rpm for it to shift. The light works when pushing the button in and out but there is no response from the transmission...

I have the same year and transmission as you do. My overdrive usually does not kick into gear until I reach higher speeds...80-ish mph. When you are doing 60-65mph what is your tachometer reading? If it is 3,200-3,500 rpm your overdrive is fine.

For our cars....the automatic transmission only has four speeds. Unless you done some modifications to the transmission....overdrive kicks in when going from third to fourth.

If you have a copy of the FSM on your computer or available to you. The FSM has a test you can run your car through to find out if there are any problems with the overdrive system.

Well up to a couple days ago turning the overdrive button off made the rpms rev higher...and when turned on the rpms reved lower. Now it stays off no matter what speed I am going.
