Problems shifting

I have a 1993 base model automatic hatchbabk 240. The problem with the shifting is that whenever I stop completely or i slow down enough for it to shift to first gear, it will sometimes get hung up in first gear and will not want to shift out. To make it shift I have to pull over and turn the car off, then it will shift when I turn it back on. The car is in the transmission shop now, but I was just trying to get some input from some people who may have had this problem before or would know how ot fix it so I could have a better idea of telling the mechanic what exactly is wrong and what might help. well I am not to familiar with auto's, but I can give some good advice nontheless....

DO NOT pay for any repairs to the transmission and DO NOT try to fix it if its more than about $50. I have seen so many auto trannies from s13/s14 ( i believe they are interchangeable to! ) go for free or at most $50 for a good one....

Thanks for the advice... I have had one person tell me that their suzuki trooper or something had the same problem and the only thing that fixed it was another used transmission, so if anyone knows where I could get a cheap or free transmission then any help would be well appreciated. Thanks
