I have a 1989 240sx 5 speed, my problem is that the transmission is very rough. On cold mornings, the car grinds in 2nd gear and it is almost impossible to put it in first gear when the car is moving.

and when I rev the engine up to about 3K or higher it revs normally but when it goes down it halts at 2K and takes about 3 - 4 secs. to go back to normal idle speed. does this makes sense?

I have a plethora of problems left but these two are the most common.

thanks

happy holidays

as far as trnsmission problems, it could be time to replace clutch. worse case senario it could be the transmission. from what your saying it could be the clutch. but before all this, double check clutch cylinder and slave. check for leaks or low fluid.

second, as far as your rough idle, it could be anywhere from tune up or time to do some adjustments to idle air.

1. Double clutch and see if it goes to 1st.2. The 3k ->2k time delay, definitely check over the iacv and possible leaks along the intake.

yeah I just replaced the clutch master cylinder and the clutch pedal was hardened. and its slightly easier to put it in first gear but its still hard.

Is there a link on how to change gear oil. That could be it but I am not sure.

thanks.

at the bottom you'll see a 1/2" square female drain plug. At the side of the transmission, you'll see a filler plug. Drain it first, then fill up with fresh GL-4 gear oil 2.4L.
