hire a midget. JK! have you tried a universal/whirly? (kinda like a UV joint for a socket)

Try a Crow's Foot attachment, like Craftsman's. You can pick one up from Sears for a few bucks. The look like the open end of a combo or open end wrench, but without a shaft; instead, they simply snap onto the square lug of the driver (Be it a ratchet handle or torque wrench, braker bar, etc.,). If you can fit a regular open end wrench on there, this should work as well. If you are actually using a torque wrench to 35ft/lbs, reduce it to about 32ft/lbs with this attachment, as it will increase the torque load by extending the fulcrum. Best of luck to you,John

can you put 2 open end wrenches together? you wont know what your torquing them down to, but atleast you will make them tight enough.

ThanksRobert 98 ka-t

If you can get access to a lift, lift the car and do it from underneath. That's how I do it. Also, they should be tightened in sequence to place an even pressure distribution. This will prevent exhaust leaks.

Oh, my bad. I didn't read carefully. The only 2 solutions I can think of are:

1) Use a socket with extra thin walls.

2) Slightly file down that area of the manifold leg that is in the way, just so that the socket will barely fit.

I would give option 1 a chance first. If you've already tried the above, please disregard this message. You can tell I haven't slept in a while...

Again, I say, Crow's Foot. If you can get an open end on there, you can torque it properly with a Crow's Foot. The right tool for the right job...John

I had the same problem - I ended up using an open-ended Snap-On wrench with some special grooves that provide very good grip on the nut - avoids stripping.

Yep, use a crows foot. You won't have to worry about using a different torque if you keep the crows foot at a 90 degree angle to the torque wrench. But considering you'll probably have to use all different kinds of angles, you might want to do what John said.

Oh, don't file any material off your exhaust runner, unless its just a really bad weld.
