My problem is with my 1998 Infiniti QX4, which honestly is more like a pathfinder mechanically. I had a problems months ago with the idle revving to high and surging up and down. It turned out to be a problem with the throttle cable coming through the firewall. A buddy of mine actually wrapped the cable with duct tape and fixed it. Well, now it's been a couple of months and the problem is back. Turns out the duct tape has turned loose. Rather than just put another band aid on it again I'd like to understand what the cause is and how to properly fix it.

Help please.

Might be time to call IOS and see if the part that was patched is available separately. My guess is that you need a new cable assembly.
