Problem with s13/j30 rear

I wanted to keep the 4.08 gears, so....I took both the s13 open diff, and j30 diff's apart. Took both the ring gears off, Put the ls center cection back together with the s13 ring gear. Dropped the limited slip into the s13 diff housing with the spacer and shims that were originally in it. Next i put the 2 caps on not torqued yet. Slid the short drivers side axle shaft in then went to the passenger shaft and it went in all but about a quarter of an inch. And thats where im stuck.It seems the longer shaft is in all the way but there is a 1/4" gap before it goes to the seal. So i need some help here.

also the c clips wernt stuck in the center section, i can see straight through the center section so nothing is hitting inside.
