Problem with reverse lights

I just purchased a 89 hatch and I have been fixing all the little problems that a car that old has. One problem I have ran into that I cannot fix is that whenever i shift into 5th gear my reverse lights come on. and when I shift into reverse nothing happens. Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to fix this problem?

your 5th gear and reverse switches are probably switched
