IF I try to do donuts or drift my rims will actually scrape the ground. I can't even drive on the freeway above 80 and take turns because it feels like they will touch. The grip is unbelieveable though.

My setup is.

Konig 17 x 8 all around. With Dunlop FM901 205/40/17. The previous owner put them on. I heard good things about these tires but they look retarded. They seem to be streched to accomidate the 8" wide rims and have rim protectors....

Do you think my problem is because of the stretched tires. I'm planning on buying new tires but I need recommendations on how wide I should go and how much sidewall I need. Its a daily driver, will be doing road courses and drifting. Something in between. Thanks

What car do you have?

Yes, your tire size is too narrow for the 8" wheel.

Where do you live and is there a reputable tire shop in town?

Our sponsor, Tire Rack, has a function on their site which will give you proper sizing options for either factory sizes, or plus sizing applications(16, 17, 18").

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/...=1992Since you supplied no year, make, model, I assumed you have something similar to a common '92 240 fastback.... but please take the time to plug in whatever specifics you can, and Tire Rack will spit out proper fitment sizing for you. It really is that simple.

A tire has a range of wheel widths that it can work within. When you "stretch" a tire to fit a wheel, you're asking the tire to work outside of it's designed functional parameters. This leads to premature failure of advertised tread life and casing and/or sidewall construction.

Also, as you have found out, this stretching will allow damage to your wheel, as it is now unprotected by the "rim protector."

Check Tire Rack for proper OE fitment, and check closely at their recommendations for 16, 17, 18" sizing. They know their stuff.

Also, look into getting some narrower wheels. 7.5 is maximum that I can find Tire Rack recommending for the car I have to assume you're talking about.

This 7.5" recommendation falls in line with one of the Bridgestone/Firestone website's tire spec sheets. Couldn't find a Dunlop spec sheet quickly enough...http://www.bridgestonetire.com/dpp/

My guess is most tire manufacturers will suggest at least a 235 width(to cover their arse), for such a wide wheel.

I have a 1990 240sx.

I live in Tacoma, Wa. Btw I noticed you live in Puyallup. I just checked...your a member of Northwest Nissans. =) Just making sure.

Hrm.. I'll consider 235......i'm thinking 225 but I don't know if that would cover it.

You have two things going here, overloaded tires, and too narrow of a tire for that wide of a rim. The 235/40-17 would be a much better fit on that wide of a rim and with the larger air chamber, it will handle the load much better. As it is, your sidewalls are streached out to the max to mate up with those rims. In hard corners, they are not getting much support from the rim and will roll. When you look at the rim width spec for each tire, try to stay as close to the middle of the range as possible for a good starting point.

this isn't exactly related to his problem, but I've been wondering if a 245 would be an acceptable fit on an 8" rim , or even a 7.5" rim

A 245/??-?? You should always focus on maintaining close to OEM tire overall diameter...

Bridgestone site still recommends at least a 8.5" wide wheel for many 245width Potenza SO-3 Pole Position tires,

and 8" wide for sizes:245/45-18245/45-17245/45-16
