Problem with coil on 1997 KA

I believe my buddies coil on his 1997 KA-T is bad. He's getting no spark. I went through the FSM process of checking the coils resistance and all signs point to it being bad. I also checked the power transistor and its all good.

The parts store wants $350 and 3-5 days to order a new distributor. Is there a way to wire up an external coil to work on the S14 distributor?
