I have a 98 I-30 I just put a new belt on the alternator and tightened it, started it up and it starts to squeek, so I tightened the top bolt but left the pulley loose while I started it to hear, it stopped squeeking so i stopped the car and tightened the pulley. Started it back up and it squeeks again, loosen the pulley and it stops, this is all without even touching the top bolt. Any ideas why that might be?

Sounds like you could have a bad bearing in the tensioner pulley.

I just did my accessory belt and had no problem. I bought it from Autozone and not Nissan/Infiniti. If you have the time, patience, and the old belt, you may want to put the old belt back on to see if it squeals. Vince

I had this same problem when replacing my idler pulley. I found that over torquing the nut was bad. Also, remember that the height adjuster has reverse threads on it.
