Problem With Ashtray

My ashtray will not close. I removed the assembly and found out why- which is unrelated to my problem I'm asking help with...

The problem is- There is a not so small black spring that puts tension on the ashtray when closed so when you press it- it springs out.

For the life of me I cannot see where this spring goes- do any of you know how it attaches?

When the center wood panel is removed- the ashtray comes out because it is attached. If any of you happen to have yours out I believe you can look through the bottom to see where this spring sits. I believe it rides on a small brass colored shaft that the ashtray pivots on, but cannot see where on the shaft it sits and where the metal prongs rest.

I would just find another one, just buy it off of a NICO guy parting out his J or go to a junkyard.

Not worth the repain in my opinion.

extremely easy repair. 10 minutes from start to finish.

I didn't realize there was this spring... just need to know the position of it.

If anyone knows- I'd appreciate your help!
