Last night I was driving and as i was braking to a stop, the car's dash lights dimmed then stalled. I restarted the car... and continued driving. It didnt stall again but occassionally that night, the dash lights started dimming again as the rpm's dropped down to the 500rpm mark and started acting like it was going to stall (ths only happens when braking to a stop) and sat there for a while, then jumped back up to normal idle (while stopped).

What is the deal... I have new 02 sensor, plugs should be in good shape cuz they were replaced when I bought the car 5k miles ago, along with wires, cap, and rotor... what else could of caused this problem. I had a milder form of this problem before but it went away after I replaced the o2 sensor. The only thing different is new fog lights... but I have been running with the fogs for a while and I don't think its cuz of bad grounding since they are directly wired into the parking lights.

Possible alternator going bad? Or some other type of mechanical failure? The belts are new as well. I got a free 27point inspection not too long ago so I don't think that I have vacuum leaks or anything. Anyone have ideas? If worse comes to worse I can take it to a mechanic to diagnose.

maybe your brake booster is taking a ****.

What is a brake booster? Also... I think its narrowed down to only happening at night since I have my lights on. I tried turning the radio on as well. It appears to me that when I have lights on, radio on, and brakes on (power brakes) it seems to be under too much load or something and the idle starts falling. I dunno. any more ideas guys? And if it IS a load issue.. what is the solution? I don't want to jump to conclusions that it is load, but it is the worst when I have all accessories on.

May a bad IACV(Idle Air Compensating/Control Valve) this is suppose to bump the idle up to compensate for loads. how does you idle act when you use the A/C ?

How do I replace the IACV valve? Is this something a relative n00b can do? (all ive done in my engine compartment is headlights, intake, and oxygen sensor).. or is this something a mechanic has to do. any idea how much it would cost? Thanks alot Nistech.. and also thanks for your reply in my other post.... the idle with A/C on got better after I replaced my o2 sensor (idle raises like 200rpm with A/C on at dead stop but I don't know what it does while breaking with everything on)... but right now it's rather cold so I havent tried turning the A/C on to test. I gues I can test that another night and turn everything on including A/C and see how it does.

no I was just wondering if the idle bumped up when you turned the A/C when sitting at an idle. This says it respondes to the load signal of the A/C. the unit is buried at the back of the intake manifold. it is a mater of a few bolts and replaceing the gasket but getting to it may require removing other parts just to get it out. This job may not be for the noob mechanic. there is a install artical on it I believe on this forum. but not sure where it is it may have been on the 240sx.org site. I know I seen it somewhere but cant recall. try useing the search for AAC or IACV cleaning.

I have experienced the exact same problem with my 93. It did it a few times when I first got the car, but vanished for about 6 months. The problem resurfaced only to disappear shortly. It also usually happened at night but not always.

check your battery terminals condition, could be a possibility

Mine does that too, but I'm sure I just have to adjust my brake pedal because several months ago my brake booster took a crapper on me and I replaced it. Haven't had time to adjust it back to oem spec.

My car is also stalling while braking, I have a 97 KA24DE into a 1989 Chassis with a 91 wire harness and ECU. I did adjust the idle air valve because the car was idling too fast when the install was complete. I think that this might be my problem--Idle adjusted too low and the vacuum draw from brake booster causes engine to almost or sometimes actually stall.
