I have an '89 240sx with an early SR20 blacktop motor, S14 driveshaft and new Nismo 2way diff. I tried breaking it in by doing figure 8's for about 30-45 minutes, while turning when I'm on the throttle I hear a noise coming from the rear, and I get wheel hop on the inner wheel of the figure 8's at low speeds. Is this normal, and if it isn't what can I do to get this fixed? Also I heard there was a 14mm nut adjustment on the pass. side of the diff inside the rear, if so how can it be adjusted and to what levels. Also for further reference, if it helps, the person who built my rear used my stock shims. While going straight or not pressing on the gas pedal at all I get no noise from the rear. If anyone can help me it will be greatly appreciated since I've been going through this problem for a while and can't seem to figure it out. Thanks in advance

It sounds normal. If your tires don't grip enough to reach the diff's breakaway torque, then it will stay locked and act like a welded diff, making your tires hop a little. You may be able to adjust the breakaway torque, but i think you do that by adding or taking away plates inside the diff itself, not by adjusting a screw anywhere. I used the stock shims in my diff too, that's more for aligning the ring and pinion gear and would not affect the performance of the diff itself. The way the 2-way clutch diff works, it will lock on accel or decel. because a cam inside the diff is pressing on the plates, thus locking them and keeping your wheels spinning at the same speed. when you are not on the gas, or have the clutch pressed in the cam is not forced against the plates, the diff doesnt lock, and you get no noise/commotion going around corners.

Check out the illustrations in this PDF file, it should help you understand why your diff does what it does.
