problem swapping 91 into an 89 help ?

I just got my wirinig harness and when i put it through the firewall (inside the car) there is a plug that has to be, well, plugged in. Unfortunatley, Nissan cleverly made a little <indent> on the clip(s). Well they are different, so, they don't plug into one another... can I just hack off the one clip and solder the right wires to the right spots ? well, i guess i already know i COULD just want to make sure that this sounds right to anyone who's done the swap ?
