I presume it is a safety issue? Darkness in Canada is much longer in the winter and they are probably necessary? Here in NJ headlights are required whenever windshield wipers are in use but you would be surprised at the number of a$$ that refuse to turn on their lights in bad weather and poor visiblity.
I am sort of divided on this 'safety issue'. If in auto mode the lights will come on if it is dark enough outside regardless if you are in Canada or Texas.
What I am surprised about is that on my 99 Chrysler in auto mode the headlights will come on if the wipers are in use regardless of how light or dark it is outside. Why my 08 Infiniti didn't have this feature (along with the auto door locks) seems to be a cost cutting feature on their part. Should be easy enough to add in, but it seems this should have been included.
One thing that bothers me about daylight running lights is that the lights will not last as long and will possibly fail to work when you need them the most at night. Also if everyone has their lights on the effect is somewhat lost.
