Well I tried to take off the oil pan today to undent it and see what the pickup looks like, but I couldn't get the damned thing off!

I looked in the FSM and it says you need a seal cutter, but I can't find one anywhere. Anyone have a link they could give me or someplace to point me to?

Thanks in advance!

If you are VERY careful you can use a flatblade razor. They use RTV to seal the pan on, so you've got to cut it loose. Once you get it started it's not too bad.

Take a screw driver and a hammer and start breaking the seal at the corners of the oil pan.

If you use the screwdriver make sure you don't bend the pan.

Mmm, that's what I was afraid of. I'd really feel better if I had a seal cutter to work with, but if a flat blade razor will do it then maybe I'll try that route. Thanks :)

the seal cutter is essentially a thin, wide 2 sided chisel, with a block that sticks out that lets you tap it in, and then you can hit the block on the side and move down the length of the pan. Its like a 90degree flat head w/ a hitting block and handle. just use a screwdriver and tap it inbetween the block and the pan and move along the block breaking the seal. once you get a good amount loose, the pan will come off when you pull it away. yes, you can bend the pan, but it can be unbent. be gentle and you won't have anything to worry about

Just screwdriver that sob out, if you bend it...just bend it back as well as you can and use a lot of RTV.

This is totally off topic, but Nathan, you have one of the funniest sigs, I've ever seen. I was LMAO for a good 5 min when I read that. That's great!

**********Update**********

Just wanted to let you know that I got the oil pan off. I ended up using a 2.5 inch wide metal putty knife. The thinner the better, but it works like a charm. No possibility of bending the pan with that thing. I started by tapping a corner in with a hammer, then I was able to get the whole thing in and slide it to break the seal, and bingo, the pan fell right off. (well, after I remounted the engine on the stand using the block holes rather than holes in the stays. Yeah, brilliant, lol)

Well hopefully none of us would promote the idea, but who knows..
