Okay so the threads on my alternator are stripped (The threads that the tensioner bolt thing goes in to) The problem is that I cannot get my alternator off due to the slip ring being stuck and not allowing the alternator off of the main mounting. Even with all bolts removed. Here is a picture of the slip ring im referring to

Can anyone tell me how to get this thing unstuck? I tried wedging it out with the bolt and no success. ANy help would be greatly appreciated. I would hate to take this to a shop for something so simple. P.S. you guys are awesome. Thanks!

I think I know what you're going through. I recently gave up on removing an alternator from the bracket (after main bolt was removed) while everything was still attached to motor. Had to remove bracket with alternator to work bench and then whacked the bracket away from alternator.

Used a flat file to creat a bit more clearance on bracket before reassembling.

Is the slip ring supposed to be removable? Duh!

No I dont think its supposed to come off... Im just trying to get the damn alternator off of the car! If i could do that, It wouldnt be much to get the threads re-tapped or at most a new alternator. I see what you mean. Remove the actual Piece that mounts to the Engine? I didn't even look to see if I could get it off. Damn that may just save me a couple hundred bucks.

After removing the belt, rotate the alternator far away from engine ... then the bracket mounting bolts are accessable.

Im going to try and do that this weekend, privided its not negative degrees outside. Do I attack the bracket bolts from the top of the engine bay or from underneath the car?

bracket bolts are through the bracket on the inside (where the alternator blocks hence why 12ounce gave you a very good suggestion of rotating the alternator up so you can gain access to those bolts holding the bracket in place).

So I guess that means that I attack the bracker bolt from above the engine? As opposed to from beneith the car.

probably easier from the bottom with your alternator being held up with a bungee cord

I don't really remember if I had to go underneath or not. I was doing an engine overhaul ... so a lot was going on.

tapping the alternator ears will eventually move the alternator off of the mount. use a long punch and hammer or plastic hammer if you can get it in there. that sleeve usually slides out with the alternator.
