Problem putting the C clip back on to the front axle

Hi,

I repacked my front wheel bearing and put everything back. However, I can't put the C clip back on to the end of the axle. It seems to be 1/2" too short. I force the axle out from below the strut and behind the wheel but it did not go out any more. Anyone know what I did wrong and how can I get the Axle to come out a little more to snap the C clip back on. Thanks a bunch.
