Hello all. I just spent the weekend installing a VLSD from an S13 180SX into my '93 240. Overall, the install went smoothly and wasn't that difficult. However, something seems to be off. At very low speeds while making sharper turns (like turning into parking spaces or driveways), the rear shakes and feels like it is binding up. I imagine that there is not enough of a differential between the two wheels and they're just fighting each other. Is this normal for a VLSD?

I am also wondering if I happen to have an HLSD. Would an HLSD react like this? I didn't really take a good detailed look when I had the cover off. But does anyone have a pick of an VLSD and an HLSD installed without the covers on? Also, on the LSD I bought, there were two cut off hoses on the cover. One was coming from the top vent hole. The other had an opening welded on the face of the cover. Any idea why these hoses were there?

Is it possible that this problem could be from not enough fluid? Or perhaps wrong fluid. I used synthetic 80w90 gear oil.

Otherwise, everything is tight, nothing is missing. Perfect clean install. So I am left to believe it is in the diff. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would suggest using the right LSD oil...regular 80/90 oil wont work for a lsd...there is a additive at auto parts store that should do the trick...it will say that it is for lsd...

I thought VLSDs could not use fluid with friction modifiers in it. Everything I read on the swap said use 80w90 gear oil. But, I am still thinking it might not be the right fluid. I forgot to mention that when I took the cover off of the LSD, everything was lightly coated with a red ATF-like fluid.

It sounds like the diff is acting like a 2 way mechanical diff that is in contact all the time, or possibly a welded diff. I haven't heard of Vlsd's acting like this, because they require increased friction to engage in the first place. From what I've read, 80W-90 gear oil is the correct one. Hopefully a visual inspection with the gears exposed can verify or disclaim this.

very true, iirc the locking is activated by heat(friction) like rabbs said so iunno why it would lock at low speed...no matter what fluid is in there

That is exactly what I have been thinking. And I swear when I had the cover off, it looked a lot like a Kaaz. Then again, I didn't really study in there, nor do I have a picture of what the R200V looks like internally. Can anyone find a picture of that?

And if it is a Kaaz, then I have the wrong oil in there. They say not to use synthetic, which I used of course.

Well, I didn't find a picture, but if the diff is an aftermarket mechanical like a Kaaz, then I believe the noise you're hearing is normal. Most people who purchase the aftermarket diffs use them almost exclusively for off-road use, so there is rarely any low-speed driving or turning where the two rear wheels need to move at different speeds. If it is a Kaaz, though, you would be right to change the fluid to one that is recommended.Good luck finding pictures

Is it shaking along with a poping noise. Maybe some vibrations from behind the center console?

Yeah I am almost positive it is not viscous at this point, I just wish I could find a pic of one so I have something to compare to.

The noise definitely isn't in the car. There is no doubt it is the wheels locking and fighting each other. Plus I already have plenty of rattles from behind the center console lol.
