My 08 Rogue just started to make a weird sound only when moving. It's not an engine noise because when I'm stopped it's quiet. I know they extended the warranty to 10 years and 120,000 miles. I'm afraid that if I go to the dealer they will just say it's fine. Has anyone had a cvt issue on an 08 or so model and what happened? I have 105,000 on it now.

thanks
Lou

If you search this forum for "CVT cooler" you will find quite a lot of information about the various issues with the Rogue CVT and it's lack of proper cooling. Leads to the 'whine' and eventually a toasted CVT. If it's whining when fully warmed up and you can demonstrate that to the dealer they should honor the warranty. If that warranty runs from the first day in service you should check that because you may not have as much time as you think.

If the whine is there and you can demonstrate it consistently I suspect they'll have to honor the warranty. If you are hearing that noise that unit is on it's way to being toast. I became very aware of all this recently. It seems to affect more than just the Rogue and I believe there was also a recall/extended warranty on the Altima's of a certain vintage as well.

One thing I can tell you is that you need to get your complaint 'on the record' before the mileage/time period expires. That puts your complaint inside the window and if you have to fight them at least you started while the warranty was in effect. Document what you do very well with dates/times/personnel and get receipts for each visit. Sad that we often have to fight so hard to make the manufacturers/dealers do the right thing but it seems to apply to each and every manufacturer out there at some point or another.

I've had worse experiences with more 'prestige' brands but that's life.

Well brought it in today and they are installing a new transmission. Fully covered by warranty and also gave me a free rental from enterprise which happens to be a 2017 black Rogue. Props to Nissan for extending the warranty on a bad design!

I am very happy to hear that. I strongly suggest that you add an external cooler when you do get it back. Without the additional cooling I suspect that it's just a matter of time before the new transmission becomes a "whiner" again. I base that on my own experience and the amount of other info about this shared by many other Nissan CVT owners in vehicles without sufficient cooling.

I need to ask how long the new one is warranted for. The first one lasted 9 years and 105000 miles. I bought it last August with 86000 on it and then started doing Uber P/T to keep myself busy. So I put 30,000 miles on it in 11 months. I am just glad I jumped on this. It started whining 2 weeks ago. The guy said it would be toast real soon. I got to say the 2017 they rented for me is sweet. Back up camera side warning stuff. It seems bigger also.

I suspect you'll get 1 year/12,000 miles or the like with the new unit. Could be wrong but that's typical for out of 'bumper to bumper' warranty work. Good luck, but if it were mine I'd be adding the cooler regardless.

Picked up the car today, brand new CVT and I asked the guy about a cooler and he said they installed one.

Well that's encouraging. I'd check the parts list on the repair order to see what cooler they did install. I know they did come up with a retro-fit kit. If they did install that for you then that's excellent news. Congratulations on getting this done and saving some serious cash!

Now that I read it I think I need to call them. This does not say added a new cooler. It says Cleaning and Inspection. see attached

I cannot see the image as it says to upgrade account for hosting images.... I have heard that lots of folks are now having an issue with Photobucket in this regard. They have broken a lot of forum images from what I hear.

Regardless, the Rogue retro-fit cooler kit is a few different parts listed as one single part number as I recall. It includes a front mounted cooler and a new block on the transmission to allow the fluid to be passed up to the new cooler. It's not cheap either so I was surprised to hear that they 'gave' you one. If they don't list the parts separately you do not have the cooler. It would be easy to check as you would have a new 'mini radiator' mounted behind your grill with two lines for the fluid running back to the transmission.

If that is not installed I would go aftermarket and put your own on there. I really think that without this precaution the new unit is destined to fail as well. Maybe it would take a long time, maybe not....

Sounds like they checked out the existing cooler with a 'cleaning and inspection'. It does not sound like a part was actually replaced. At this point it seems to me that you'd need to look for lines running to the front of the car from the transmission cooling block. That would verify that you have the '4 port' unit and that it does, in fact, have the additional cooling capability. Unfortunately that may be the only way to verify that you have what you need.
