remove the shifter cover (i remember therer are 4 metal clips). then you will be able to find the location of the light bulb.

Yes I can reach under and free the bulb and socket but there is not enough roomor wire to get to the bulb. Do I remove the 4 screws and lift the shift selector mechanism up?

yes! i remember the shifter will like to move around once you remove the 4 screws. as a precaution, keep the shifter steady once the screws are removed. good luck.

That was the trick I also had to remove the shift knob to raise the box high enough to get the bulb.

Thanks!

I haven't been doing much night driving in my J30 at all lately.

So, I couldn't find a green cover and went looking for colored bulbs. Autozone has 194R (red), 194B (blue), etc., but no green. I just bought a 168G (you guessed it, green), and it fits fine and works. It might be easier than trying to find a cover.
