I'm voting for the Prius Drivers.

EL CAJON, California -- A California Highway Patrol officer helped slow a runaway Toyota Prius from 94 mph to a safe stop on Monday after the car's accelerator became stuck on a San Diego County freeway, the CHP said.

Prius driver James Sikes called the police emergency dispatcher about 1:30 p.m. after accelerating to pass another vehicle on Interstate 8 near La Posta and finding that he could not control his car, the CHP said.

"I pushed the gas pedal to pass a car and it did something kind of funny ... it jumped and it just stuck there," the 61-year-old driver said at a news conference. "As it was going, I was trying the brakes...it wasn't stopping, it wasn't doing anything and it just kept speeding up," Sikes said, adding he could smell the brakes burning he was pressing the pedal so hard.

A patrol car pulled alongside the Prius and officers told Sikes over a loudspeaker to push the brake pedal to the floor and apply the emergency brake.

"They also got it going on a steep upgrade," said Officer Jesse Udovich. "Between those three things, they got it to slow down."

After the car decelerated to about 50 mph, Sikes turned off the engine and coasted to a halt.

The officer then maneuvered his car in front of the Prius as a precautionary block, Udovich said.

In a statement, Toyota said it has dispatched a field technical specialist to San Diego to investigate the incident.

Toyota has recalled some 8.5 million vehicles worldwide -- more than 6 million in the United States -- since last fall because of acceleration problems in multiple models and braking issues in the Prius.

Toyota owners have complained of their vehicles speeding out of control despite efforts to slow down, sometimes resulting in deadly crashes. The government has received complaints of 34 deaths linked to sudden acceleration of Toyota vehicles since 2000.

One of the crashes claimed the life of a CHP officer last August.

Off-duty CHP Officer Mark Saylor was killed along with his wife, her brother and the couple's daughter after their Lexus' accelerator got stuck in La Mesa.

The Toyota-manufactured loaner vehicle slammed into a sport utility vehicle at about 100 mp, careened off the freeway, hit an embankment, overturned and burst into flames.[/quote]My thoughts: What kind of a moron calls the cops in a situation like that? Ever heard of an ignition switch (or button)?. . . on second thought are Prius' so dumb that you can't turn them off while driving?

Depending on the car, the ignition button has to be held down to deactivate the vehicle.

It can be a frightening experience for a lot of people. Try to imagine the kind of person that buys a Prius.

If 90mph is sufficient cause for you to panic, you need to start taking the bus. And definitely get off the same roads I drive on. Yeah, 90mph is above the speed limit. But it isn't really that fast. Certainly not so fast that you can't calmly try and shut off the car. Most traffic is probably going 75 anyway...15mph difference isn't exactly catastrophic unless you're such an incompetent driver that you have no business being behind the wheel of a car in the first place.

It was an emergency. I see nothing wrong with calling 911 in the case of an emergency. So the guy couldn't think to turn the car off in a stressed state, big deal.

Just make sure it's not a Prius Powered.

If I can take my 8,500lb bus down the road at 90mph and get used to it surely some poor sucker in a 2,000 LB prius can do the same without catastrophic failure. In fact the Corolla I drive sometimes cruises along nicely at 90-100 mph.

Why not pop it in neutral and use the e-brake? I don't know why everyone isn't suggesting this, it should be in every article about the runaway Toyotas.

Apparently there is a special way to put the car in neutral with some crazy steps, CVT's suck.

I think it was a good idea, since the guy was too panicked/confused/dumb to do it on his own. At least he realized this, called, and a cop showed up to help prevent an accident.

I'm still dumbfounded why he didn't put it in neutral and roll on the shoulder until the car naturally slowed down. But whatever. I like my old a** manual cars that don't have computer controlled throttles/brakes/etc.

Oh, and Prius drivers are d!ck (some of them). I was going up hill on a two-lane 50mph road and this Prius decided to ride in the left lane under the limit. I go to pass and he tries to speed up and box me out with a slow-moving minivan in the right lane. The Subaru had enough gumption to get by him. WTF dude. Then he flips me off later at another light. What the hell? YOU DRIVE A PRIUS. GET OUT OF THE PASSING LANE.
