I got this request in my e-mail this morning. Its from "Gregg" at "REALCARTIPS.com". Not sure who this guy is, but a search on this site for "realcartips" turned up nothing. Is this just a guy trying to use NICO to market his site, or is this legit?

I don't mind helping out a legit member, but I don't want to contribute to this site being a buffet of sales leads for a company that doesn't have a relationship with NICO, or link back to this site in a cooperative way. The site forces you to provide your information before you can get to the next screen. You also have to provide your e-mail address to get results. It looks like BS to me so I did neither.

Here is the body of his e-mail:

I came across one of your posts on the Infiniti forums and it looks like you own a 2008 Infiniti G35.I was wondering if you could help me out. I'm trying to build a database of prices that people paid for their new cars and it would be a huge help if you could post the price you paid for your Infiniti.

I'm not sure if you remember the MSRP and the price you paid, but if you do, I would really appreciate it (and so would future Infiniti G35 buyers). You can submit your price at the following URL:

http://www.realcartips.com

After you submit your price, it automatically ranks you compared to other G35 buyers, so you can see if you got yourself a good deal or if your dealer ripped you off.

And in case you're wondering, the reason for the site is to help future car buyers figure out how much they should pay for their new car. A few years ago, I got totally ripped off when I bought my car and I'm hopinga site like this will help prevent others from being ripped off as well.

thanks,

GreggFounder, RealCartips.com

P.S. - you're one of the first people to know about my site, so if you have any feedback, I would much appreciate it. thanks.

I got the same email and did reply. He wasn't really asking for anything private, other than what you paid, if you had a trade, and what the interest rate and loan terms were if you financed the buy. As far as giving my email address, well, I guess he already had it.

I'm not sure if what he is trying to do is any different than what you get from Edmunds.com when you research what others are really paying. It'll be interesting to see if anything comes of it.

The problem with what he is trying to do is that it's motivation is that he feels he got ripped off. You should never look back when it's too late to do anything about it. If you were happy with the deal when you took it, then live with it, because it's not always just about the money--it's about timing, the right vehicle, and other non-monetary factors.

We (the mods) have come to the conclusion it's spam. If I were you... just delete it and do not respond, you may open yourself up to more junkmail.

I don't really like the guy snooping our forum and harassing our members. If he wants to become a member and get permission to post the matter, then fine, I'll think about responding. But I see a guy usurping the rules here. Just my 2 cents.

I'm not defending the guy because I don't know him, but I think he is being sincere. I did write back to his email saying I completed the survey and he wrote back thanking me. That doesn't sound like SPAM behavior.

A lot of people come up with ideas for a website that they hope catches on and can later sell it to a bigger company. Everyone wants to become another "myspace" or "youtube".

I feel the same way. Well-intentioned, or not, I don't like forums to become a direct marketing list for people promoting other products, or sites- even if they are non-profit.

Acknowledged and thanks for the reply. If this guy isn't affiliated with NICO, and is only using the board to get e-mail addresses to promote/collect data for his own site, then he can pound sand as far as I am concerned.

I got the same e-mail. I guess everyone with 08 was the target?? I didn't reply, thinking it probably wasn't NICO approved.

For the record...NICO does not provide any members emails for spam.
