$30k new in 2004? Not a 6MT with the Premium package and all options, which is close to what he's describing. MSRP easily pushed $38k, possibly you could cut a deal down to ~$35-36k but not $30k for a new 6MT Leather Coupe.
The car however today is worth
at most ~$18-19k, only because of the low mileage (I'd expect closer to 50-60k miles by now). $17k would be a good price for private party sale. Depreciation rates would have put the car at about $24k after 24-36 months, when it was still under warranty (
time and mileage based, major powertrain is done at this point after 6 years).
The low miles are a mixed blessing - in the next 30k miles of ownership, its next owner is looking at least:
1) Tires - Good luck spending less than $1000 here once you've got them mounted and a quality alignment done. Michie PS2's are not high mileage tires, as low as 15k and about 30k is typical.
2) Clutch - It's not unusual to see the crappy OEM clutch gone by 40k. Parts are not cheap, they do not resurface the dual mass flywheel, dealers will quote about $300 in clutch parts, $1000-1100 for a new flywheel. AM you can go JWT, etc. but still ~$800 in parts, $400 labor easily.
3) Brakes - most owners get not more than ~30-40k out of the Brembo OEM setup from Infiniti, dealer quote for 4 rotors and pads + labor >
$2400 AM you can get good rotors and pads but they will still run close to a grand.
Add in rear diff fluid and trans fluid change, probable serp and AC belt replacement due to age alone, addressing any of the TSB issues like gas tank vent hose, rear axle click, TB cleaning, there's more than the $23k cost of entry to be considered even with the low mileage. Might be better off with a ~40k mile car with these already addressed. Don't get me wrong, I like my G a lot, bought it new, had it since Dec 2003, 62k miles now, drive it 4 seasons, do most of the work myself so cost hasn't been quite as bad as someone who pays for all the service. It's a great car and has been very reliable, just people need to come in eyes-wide-open on TCO for this car. Still a great driver's car
