Just out of curiosity, what would you guys pay someone to install a motor for you (assuming you couldn't do it yourself of course)? I am in the process of installing my friend's motor for free (maybe a pizza and some beer ) and I've installed my own motor (twice now, since I had it rebuilt) I put a KA in an s12, and have helped with an SR into an s13 and s14. I'm no stranger to nissan swaps. I like to think I understand what I'm doing under the hood pretty well

anyways, recently I've been asked by afew local people if I could either install, or help install a motor for them. They said they would pay me to help them out, but asked what I would charge... What would you consider reasonable for them to pay for me to do all the physical swap and wiring? What would you pay for similar service? Local shops charge anywhere between $1000 and 1500 for the labor alone and up to $200 for wiring. I was thinking in the $500 range for the labor, and I'll get the guys at Enjuku to do the harness ($150ish) so that'll be professional and well done... I'm sure given enough time I can replicate similar quality as a shop, just not on the same timeframe that they would take, hence the cheaper price. Think thats a reasonable rate for a swap?

i'd say you pretty much have a good price right there to make some nice cake on the side. $500 for labor and $150 for harness isn't bad at all.

You've got my vote. I made the mistake of doing a harness for $50. I'll never do that again. That was way too cheap.

$500-$600 is good enough. And $350-$450 for the wiring.

Why so much for a harness if you are just going to send it off?

I think it would dishonest to charge more than just for the time it took you to pack & send the harness to them.

I'd just charge whatever Enjuku charges me... since I live right down the street from them there wouldn't be any shipping charges either. I don't know what they would charge though (My friend does their harnesses and did mine for free.... I wouldn't expect that for someone else's harness though.)

thanks for the advice guys!

I can get harnesses wired by a guy here in houston for $75 each, and do an engine swap over a weekend, I guess it depends.. if it was someone I knew I'd probably do it for a couple hundred (that be 100 dollars labor a day) but for someone that just wanted me to do it for them, probably 3 or 400....its such a simple swap that I can't see charging much more than that. If a shop quoted me $1000 bucks I'd laugh and walk out, but I know just how little work is involved...

oh and I want to add an edit here, it would depend on what they want you to do as well.. obviously if "swapping" involved installing a new o2 housing, downpipe, catback, instrument cluster, relocating the power steering resevoir (for sohc) or other work, it should probably cost more...

You also have to remember that shops have a higher overhead that they have to compensate for so they have to charge more to keep in business.

How hard is wiring? It takes like 30 minutes. There's like a dozen wires that need to be cut and soldered, then covered, and heat shrink tubing is a cinch. You could also get rid of unused plugs, but how hard is that? Cut it off, cover it up.

you are correct... and I could probably pull my harness and copy exactly what was done on it, but I am a big fan of clean wiring. My wiring harness looks like it came from a LHD CA18DET car its so clean Estevan does awesome wiring work.
