So does everyone here press their clutch in to start their car? Can I just disconnect a switch under the dash so I can bypass this? I have done this on all my GVR4s...quick and simple. Just curious if the 240 has this and what color would this plug be?

Also, does anyone have one of those security key switch thingamajig where you must have the plastic key inserted in order to start the car? Does that need the clutch to be depressed in order to start the car? Thanks, John

I just got my auto swapped to a manual and they told me that mine didnt have the "clutch safety" working in it. This means I dont have to have the clutched depressed to start it.

I like that b/c I can install a remote starter on a manual car. They thought they had done something wrong, i felt like they did something VERY right, so I told them not to worry about it and leave it like that.

So, yeah, you can do it on a 240, im just not sure how

Pressing the clutch in will make it easier for the starter motor.

yea, DSM, you can disable that clutch switch...

it's just a safety device so you won't start the car in gear...

remote-start guys would do this... hopefully they know not to keep their cars in gear & enable the parking brake all the time (says capt' obvious)

I did this with my DSM and my last 240, it just wasnt as easy as the DSM. On the 240 you have to unplug the safety switch and cut the plug off then solder or twist the left over wires together.

How so? It doesnt take any weight or pressure off. In fact the pressure from put on from the clutch slave would make things worse.

This is done on DSM's to save wear and tear on the thrust bearing to help avoid crankwalk. I do it to all my cars to avoid the pressure put on the flywheel which in turn puts pressure on the crank bearings during starts, especially cold, dry ones.

how?

and its very simple to disable

crawl under the dash, look at the pedal assembly. there is a plug with 2 wires going to a button that gets pressed by the clutch

you can eithrea) unplug the plug and put a paper clip in it

or

b) cut the wires and splice them together.

you cant just unplug it, car wont start.

I know it's been a while, so I must apologize for the extra wear on your starter motors.

If you don't push the clutch pedal, the starter motor has to turn over the engine AND part of the transmission.

If you push the clutch pedal in, the starter motor just has to turn the engine over.

LOL

the transmission input shaft only takes a few foot lbs of force to turn, ever tried to dry turn an engine? it takes 10x the force to crank an engine because not only does the physical rotating mass weigh 5x what an input shaft does, it has to compress air thats in the cylinders.

not only that, but a clutch doesnt FULLY disengage from the flywheel anyway, so the input shaft still spins even with the pedal depressed.

Don't forget about the transmission counter-shaft!!

Anyhow, I never claimed it made a huge difference.

yea, you can bypass this, but it isnt advised, just look behing your clutch pedal and you will find a push in button, just either unplug it, or cut the wires and hook the 2 ends together, i havent rele looked at it. but it is either 2 wires hooked up means the clutch is in, or the wires dont touch meaning the clutch is in

I did a 5 speed swap and im GLAD i dont have mine...

Theres only SO many presses your clutch componants have in them before they wear out..and i prefur to save them from as much unneccesary use as possible!

it's neither good or bad. just a state of being. if you need to replace the switch, meh might as well just get rid of it or replace it. depends on you. the rest of us that had to convert, well I suppose we could always add one, but why the extra effort and wasted money?
