Did Kerry do well for himself.... or did Kerry do well for himself.

I'm sorry, but rebuttals that don't address the issues and are repetitive = teh lose lose.

my one line thoughts:

both were very conservative with their points and nothing really earth shattering was said, nothing new really learned. it's a toss up, and I don't see this debate changing any of the more 'knowledgeable' peoples minds, and very few of the drones minds.

edit: i didn't mean 'conservatively' in the political sense.

that said...

I thought kerry did extremely well, the only one thing was i counted several flip flops in that very debate. Bush kinda looked like a deer in the headlights a couple of times, but over all, I think kerry will need a tampon in his bum, because he received a rapping

I unlocked it after locking it and typing up a concise explanation as to why. I've shortened my post and am happy to let the natives run the show

Bush could have knocked Kerry out of the race tonight if he had performed a little better. I'm sorry to see that it did not happen. But, realistically... I think Kerry's performance will sit better with John Q. Public. Obviously I'm biased and I feel Bush was FAR more informative and had much more clear conviction. But, Kerry put on the better show and he looked like a man with a mission tonight.

While Kerry certainly seemed better prepared, and more calm, cool, and collected...he was caught in several inconsistincies and said a few REALLY stupid thing (pottery barn anyone?). It pains me that Bush came across as ill prepared and uncomfortable...if he had had fewer awkward pauses and verbal stumbles, he could have owned Kerry with ease. As it is now, Bush might have been more informative and more accurate, but Kerry came across much better. The 90% of Americans that are too stupid to know what they are listening to will obviously think that Kerry won this debate (this is evinced by the poll quoted earlier). One thing that Bush did very well was in sticking to only the recent past...Bush limited his side of the discussion to the past 4 years for the most part, while Kerry kept bringing up the goddamned Vietnam war. I've got a newsflash for Mr. Kerry...we ALL know he's a "war hero" he can shut the **** up about it now, we get the damn picture. One other thing that I think Kerry fell short on was convincing emotion about the state of his country. He came across rather dull and flat to me, while Bush seemed to be very emotionally tied to his side of the debate and how it related to our country and others. I got the impression that Bush ACTUALLY gives a ****, and Kerry just wants you to think he does. Obviously I'm very biased, but hell...we all are

If I thought people who went to CNN.com represented a good cross-section of the nation, I'd be happy, but I don't have that much faith. I am a Kerry supporter this time around, but I think that Bush came out pretty well, even if he was speaking retard. The whole "Kerry is indecisive" angle probably hit home with a LOT of people in this country. I for one know a couple people who talk exactly like Bush (scary huh? One's my BOSS), and just the language he uses, the fist on the table, and the "hard work" repeated over and over again is enough to get their vote. I think that from a debate standpoint, Kerry won, but my lack of faith in our nation's population is making me worry that Bush got done what he needed to get done.

"don't forget Poland!"

I agree with a lot of what has been said about Kerry not having a plan any better than Bush for the situation in Iraq. Which was shown in the debate--his responses didn't really address the issues like Vicki said. And no ground was broken. I want something to be blatantly said, like when Jon Stewart was talking with Giuliani last night. That was great. Why can't the debate be like that?

But to me, what clearly stood out was that Kerry was able to answer quickly, and clearly which says a lot since politicians are usually lost without their writers so he kinda 'hit the ground running'--a good quality to have. Bush looked like a goof with his stuttering, awkward pauses, and the wide-eyed look. Didn't make him look good at all. He doesn't have the answers to justify what he has done in the past 4 years and nothing to show for it either...it's painfully obvious.

All I know is that this debate depressed me. Can someone intelligent run for president please?

I didn't watch the whole thing, but from what I saw Bush was outmatched in terms of ability to debate. The thing about Kerry is that some of the stuff he emphasized or said with a lot of conviction made no sense or was completely wrong. At the same time I can imagine many of the "stupid" people being moved and excited over how he talked more than what he talked about.

I honestly can't think of a good reason to vote for either of them after watching that.

I think this should be a new NICO rule. If anyone makes a political/religious the thread should be locked. The person that makes the thread should be given a warning.

Not a bad idea, WZ.

My thoughts, before we close this thread, just because I can :

The Prez is NOT a polished speaker. He's a poor communicator, certainly not on a par with some of the great orators that have inhabited the White House (Lincoln, Kennedy, Reagan and even Clinton).

Senator Kerry is a wonderful speaker - He appeals to the segment of the population for whom that is an important factor (lots of experience as the Captain of the collegiate debate team).

I think Nathan (and Reno) nailed it in his description - While I was disapointed in Presiddent Bush's "performance" I think if the debate had been less formally moderated, he'd have done better. Too many rules hurt him, and I found myself cringing when he stumbled. However, i also found myself WISHING he could counter some of Sen Kerry's proposals with questions like, "How do you propose to DO that?", as many of the things he promised aren't as easily done as he makes them sound.

But again, the American public is not privy to those facts, and often a smooth talker can appear to have all the answers.

Bottom line? Go VOTE. I don't care WHO you vote for, just do it. Let's make this the first election where a bunch of car nuts make a difference.

NICO r0x teh VOTE.
