LOL - Just saw on the news, some wankoff Iraqi reporter chucked his shoes at the President during a press conference.

The look on Bush's face as he ducks both shoes is classic - He's like, "WTF is this looney doing?"

Bush later stated the only thing he could report on the incident is that the shoes were a size 10...

Yeah, he's a bit of a doof. But you gotta love his sense of humor.

That guy had a cannon, those things were lazer guided or something gdamn BOTH of them would have found their mark if Bush haddnt of had ninja like reflexes. You could tell he saw it coming, but those were still some nice moves. That guy must have been practicing his technique because that was quite a show.

Bush didnt have to try nearly as hard to dodge impeachment.

Lol @ oddjob comment.

That guy is now considered an enemy combatant and earned himself a stay in Guantanamo.

Dana Perino helped take him down and got a black eye. He probably did it just so Dana would jump him.

I don't know. My first reaction was, this is Iraq, why did it take the Secret Service so long to react? Green zone or not, insurgents have hit certain parts of the green zone before.

Ya beat me to it...

Bush still has quick reflexes. He ducked the first like a boxer dodging a jab.

I dont think tossing a pair of shoes was worth getting his arse stomped...

Thats exactly what I was thinking when I saw it. Theres no way that guy should have still been standing by the time his first shoe arrived at the podium little less having the chance to throw the other one. My guess is that they are trying to keep the SS out of camera shots in Iraq to make Americans think everything is safe and under control there.

I'd guess that the press in the room was checked and cleared by the SS. With no weapons and being what appeared to be a private area, there probably wasn't a pressing concern for security. Let alone the shock and awe of someone trying to throw a shoe at the President. It could have taken a moment to figure out it was somewhat threatening. Though, the whole incident was likely never intended to threaten Bush's life. I'd speculate it was more of a political statement.

As for Bush's humor (any politician for that matter), I tend to believe that most have senses of humor and beyond what we see of them in public office, they are, for the most part, pretty normal people.

Odd line, not sure where to start lol.

Bush is the most hilarious president we have ever had. This might be simply because hes had more media exposure than most any other president, but still. So trying to make his one positive(even this is a stretch IMO..) quality as a president seem like its run of the mill isnt really accurate. I know that might not have been the entire point of that line, but the sentiment is still there.

In addition, politicians being normal? Thats a hard line to swallow, even with you saying for the most part. Average/normal IQ is 100. Pretty much every politican is above that, you would think..

The word normal when applied to people in and of itself is kind of a conundrum, very subjective. Idk thats probably just a personal thing but w/e.

Throwing shoes, lighting shoes on fire to try and blow up aircraft, same shxt different day.

Anyway, while I am obviously no big fan of W's Presidency, I applaud his quick reflexes.

His elegant self-depreciating humor regarding this incident reinforces the fact that even if his Presidency is ill regarded by history, he probably has a solid 2nd career ahead of him as a comedic talk show host. He's welcome to show up at my house for a beer anytime he wants, although I can't guarantee my wife won't throw things at him there too, lol.

One news article pointed out that throwing shoes or hitting something with shoes is a sign of extreme disrespect in the Arab Cultures. It makes sense if you remember when the giant statue of Saddam was pulled down you saw people hitting it with their shoes.

Yeah, you've gotta wonder about that part anyway.

I think the sentiment is there for you because that's how you see it. But had Bush not been president, I'd speculate that he could live amongst the rest of us just fine. As could most other politicians. We simply see them in the light that they and the media create as a matter of politics. For all we know, he could easily be the kind of dad that tells corny jokes to his kids at the dinner table.
480sx wrote:In addition, politicians being normal? Thats a hard line to swallow, even with you saying for the most part. Average/normal IQ is 100. Pretty much every politican is above that, you would think..
Is that to say anyone with an above average IQ is not normal?

Surely, the word normal can be defined subjectively. But in the context it was used, the definition was pretty broad. The implication I made was simply that his personality could easily be mixed in with the rest of the populace and he would not be labelled as "different". I consider you intelligent enough to know what I meant.

I knew what you meant, i simply have a problem with the whole idea of 'normal' people. Like i said my post was mainly composed from a personal issue, i wasnt trying to bust your balls.

Your q however leaves me with a lack for words.. I suppose once again, it goes down to your definition of normal. English is a very broad language and you can take words in many different ways. By one definition, people with above average IQ's are not normal at all. By another, they are still considered socially normal, or simply not 'abnormal', making them normal.

I would however agree with you that there is no way you could consider bush to be abnormal socially, so therefor he would fit right in and could be considered normal. A lot of politicians however do not share that same luxury.
