I've decided my car (2011 G37xS) does not deserve Premium gas and I've filled the tank with regular unleaded gas today. I'll continue to do so and rate how the gas mileage and HP is.

See the following document for reasoning behind my doing as well.

p.s. Please crawl my posts to see why my infiniti does not deserve premium gas, lmlo.

Not sure how to put this into a quick, painless, and understandable way. Like what was mentioned, you jeopardize performance by going with a lower quality fuel. If that's no matter, then ditch the premium. If you're car is a lease, and you don't have to perform the overall maintenance, then I say go for it. But, for someone like myself, who has three mid 90's vehicles, they're all getting premium. After a measly 6 years in the auto industry, I've seen some very adverse effects of lower quality fuels. I am not only referring to grade, but also brand. I was also an aviation fuel handler in the Army. Fuel plays an obvious important role in any internal combustion motor. The cleaner, higher octane fuel will allow for better performance overall. That being said, it can also help sustain the life of various components in the fuel system/combustion process. I'd be willing to bet that your '11 G does not come with an easily replaceable fuel filter. Most newer vehicles have them as a part of the fuel pump assembly. I change mine out once a year. Using premium, they stay rather clean. On lower quality/grades, I've seen them clog and need replacing in as little as four months. That's all I'm going to put in to this right now. I may come back and add more later, if you still need convincing.

pumping premium has already made me poor so i may as well continue. columns like the one you linked to are designed to catch peoples attention. its obviously worked. this column is on the premise of saving money, not making your car last or getting the best performance.

if you want save on insurance, go with a cut rate company. if you want to save on food each month, eat ketchup and bread.

i do look forward to your findings though.

Pumping premium made you poor? You are looking at, what, 6 bucks +/- a tank difference from one to the other? How many tanks of fuel do you use a month?

i think you know I was joking. But i do drive 30k per 12 months. you missed my real point in that this article is on the premise of saving money, not getting the best performance/life out of your vehicle.

career wise, im heavy into economics. i think our oil prices are near their peak and expect to see it fall back down to 100/bb. hopefully by july/ august. normally fuel prices do go up in the summer time.

makes me think hard on that M series hybrid

I'd think twice about the M series if you're talking Infiniti. My co-worker decided against an infiniti not because of the horror stories I told her concerning the hard down shifting with the transmission but from one of her friends whom owns an M series Infiniti with the same exact hard down shifting with the transmission.

So the problems don't stop at the G37, they are all across the board.

My advice again, go with a Honda.

The VQ's are very prone to knock, so if you want to increase that chance even more, go ahead and run that 87 octane.

Ok, so was it the paint chips, the loose driver seat, or the non-wood dash? :gotme

It's the combination of everything and don't forget the transmission.

The transmission is the hardest to deal with.

Mine doesn't knock

Runs great on 87 octane for the past 5 1/2 years

Your car is a G35 Sedan. Your manual says 87 is OK.
The G37 engine is different and calls for Prem.

It's a VQ. Both responses are valid.

Which responses?
My response was to Telcoman's response which is very valid in respect to a G35 Sedan, however, the OP has a G37.
I was just trying to clarify that the G35 Sedan recommended fuel by Infiniti is different that that of the G37 Sedan. Actually, it is also different from the G35 Coupe.
This is based on the owner's manuals that come with the cars.
If somebody has lost theirs, they are available online.

Which has a lot of influence on your gas mileage, but absolutely none on your fuel grade requirements.

My point was that Telco replied to a remark about knock on VQ engines. Of which his is an example.

OK, I see you point.
Red_Det was responding to the OP who has a G37.
Telcoman (G35 sedan owner) was responding to a generalized statement about the VQ engine that was directed to a G37 owner.
But, yes you are correct.

I had a G37 loaner from the dealer for a few days while my G was in the shop. I used regular 87 octane and it ran fine.

When it comes time to replace my G35 with a G37 I'll still be using regular.
The savings can be delicious :yesnod

I think Telco's going to put the picture of that steak in his sig before this is over with. :tongue

I've been running mid-grade in my G37x, don't see a performance or mpg difference. For a Tarheel, I guess Virginia is the north, so that should be fine too! ;)

I would be curious to know if there are any long term effects on the engine by not following what Infiniti recommends.
Please report back in 100K!
Or maybe we need another thread ' Most miles on G37 running non-prem. fuel.

^I tend to turn them over at about 40K. With gas prices heading steadily up, the fueling decision on my next car may be whether to charge with 110 or 220.
