I have almost always put 93 in mine. I did put the medium grade in it last time because 93 was freakin $4.10 a gallon.

I have never had it ping. 99% of the time though, I put 93. I guess I want to make sure I get all the performance that I'm paying for.

We've discussed this a few times on here. Soup and I in particular were a little nervous about some post-Katrina fill-ups when 91 or better octane was hard to find and we were forced to use 89 or *shudder* 87 out of necessity. I was carrying around a few containers of octane booster just in case. But octane boost on a full tank of 89 won't do very much, it was as much for my peace of mind as anything else.

With the the Z's agressive timing I'd never use anything less than 91 unless it was unavailable and then I'd use as little as the other stuff as I had could to keep the average rating higher. I've always considered it the "price of doing business" for driving the Z. Like Z/28, I've never had a single ping.

Back when my Z/28 was my DD (before supercharger), I got stingy once and put regular in it. I hadn't gone 3 miles before it started sounding like someone was playing ping pong under my hood. :ohno: I guess American muscle is a lot different than Japanese technology. I worked for an automotive warehouse then. I went staight into the back and got me a bottle of 104+. It made it quit pinging and I never got stingy on my gas for it again.

:nono:

Of course, now a tank of gas for that car will last me a year. :chuckle:

My thought is why risk doing harm to an expensive engine by going against the manufacturer's recommendation on an alternative that costs almost the same?
