 well, i decided to fill my 240 w/premium instead of middle grade...and my gas gauge is droppin like a rock. I usually get about 360 miles on a full tank, shiftnig at about 2500 rpm to 3200. It adds up to about 100miles per 1/4 tank. and i am at a little less than half a tank left and i've only gone about 170 miles. i should have about 50 more miles on this tank. I thought that premium would give better mileage if anything

WTF?

I think premium is requred, right? Why would it make it get worse gas mileage? I have a 95 and I got about 21mpg on the freeway going between 80-110mph

I've never even tried Premium, I suppose I should. Had my used '92 240SX since early summer, and have put nothing but 89 in it so far. Seems to get okay mileage, although I haven't really tested it. I did reset my trip odometer last time I filled the tank though, and I'll check how many miles when I get to half tank. Anybody know offhand how many gallons the 1992 Nissan 240SX SE Fastback holds? I'm sure it's in the manual but I'm lazy. ;)

I run 89 in my car most of the time, unless I find premium for cheap. I average almost 27mpg combined driving on the 89. I can get 30mpg if I drive like Oma.

I think that unless you have advanced timing or a power adder of some variety, premium is a waste of $$$.

i wouldn't doubt it. thats why i'm thinking of trying the mid-grade gas. if i don't see any difference, i'm gonna just keep getting it, not that real expensive premium. its not that bad putting premium in it though, if you only have to fill your tank up like once a month or sumthing like that : ) i don't have my license yet (34 days) so i don't drive it all that much. but once i have my license, i'm gonna be filling her up all the time. dang, that sux.

You won't see the benefits of premium right away you need to use it a few times to get all of the regular gas out. I am going to swap to a SR20DET but I still use premium in the KA24DE because it is recommended for the motor to run properly. Also if you plan on keeping the motor for a while it may be a wise investment for motor longevity.

hey Moot, could possibly be that your tank wasn't topped off when you started measuring. Perhaps you were doing more stop/go than normal, or were using the airconditioner. Both kill gas mileage. I use premium exclusively in my S-13 and get 350-400 miles a tankful everytime. Mine knocks if I use anything lower than 93 octane. Good luck

As a fuel specialist for exxon you dont need to use mid or premium grade gas unless your high performance which still you only need that if your really gonna be putting it to the metal all the time. The additives in the fuel mixture will actually cause build up in the lines when used as an every day driving fuel.

That sucks Tino :(

My new ECU has a sticker on it that states "Use 92 O or Above Only"

I tried regular fuel once, and it retarded the timing or sumething.....The car ran like crap....stalled, and bogged and kicked and screamed.....

It took two-three tanks of 92 to get the kinks worked out. I have not tried mid range yet.

The gas tank in my S14 is about 13 gallons, maybe a little bit more. I use Mobile 93, and I can get about 340-350 if I run it down all the way. However I deliver pizzas and like beating on my car sometimes, so I sometimes get 280-290 to the tank.

If the manufacturer recommends higher octane, they recommend it for a reason. The KA has slightly higher compression which would warant the use of premium fuel. It also depends where you live, gas is different in different parts of the country. The 240 has a knock sensor to retard the timing if things get too bad with lower octane fuel to keep things safe, but with a slight sacrafice in performance. At least buy 89, you will make up the extra cost and then some by the increase in mileage. Whats the extra cost of filling up with premium over 89, a buck? maybe a few cents more? Its worth it to me for the piece of mind for the extra dollar.

oh, and its not good to run your tank low- keep in mind electronics dont like heat, keeping your tank with a decent amount of gas in it will keep the fuel pump cooler.

I don't know if you guys have Shell gas stations in the states but its got a terrible rep in Canada. Its like 50% sheep urine, jest playen. but i heard Chevron with 'Techron' w/e that is is good stuff. I got a 93 hatch and can't afford high octane, 89 gives me 300 mpg. Anything more is unbeleivable to me, unless of course you coast in neutral down everyhill. Or mabe my car is playen with me and im getting ripped off. hey never thought of it that way. uh oh. peace.

Would letting the engines compression slow u down i.e. downshifting. Use up that much more gas than if i was neutral or clutch/brake? I mean i'm down about 75 miles than normally from middle grade to high.

I only use 93, from BP or amoco (tis who I have a credit card with ;)

I tried 87 once.....just to see the difference.car knocked so bad.I still think it doesn't run as smoothly as it used to.

I usually get around 22.8 mpg, (mostly freeway, but also stop and go, driving to tampa 4 nights a week , which is 45miles each way)

I can get around 300-320.. before I fill up...around that time the gas light comes on... which is about 12-13 gallons

trip to orlando over the weekend, I got 26mpg

my car isn't running in its best shape either.. not sure what it is.. i got a hesitation problem where it seems like it isn't getting enough fuel..Hopefully its not the fuelpump.. although i'd rather it be the fuelpump than an injector

and engine braking/downshifting I do PLENTY of (everytime I stop)

Not getting good gas milage is not necessarily due to using premium gas or midgrade or whatever. There are different reasons why u may be getting crappy gas milage. My preference for gas is Premium, because I love my car and give it the best; and it does call for it because it is a performance car!

Yeah I hear ya Misty, I never put anything less than 91 octane in my car, but in my area the highest is always 93 so thats a given. I use Shell and Mobil 1 premium and get about 300-350 in a mix of stop-go highway driving. (Shell in the Chicago area is a very good quality) There isn't a reason to put anything less than 90 really, especially since the manual recommends like 91 or something. I just wish I lived in Japan, where they love their cars as much men love women. 105 octane.. dangit...

i've always used premium ....only from chevron.....if i cannot find a chevron then i will go to shell....lower octane gas i feel always effects performance on my cars....i will be happy to kick out the extra cash for a cleaner burn....i also use octane booster if i plan on runnin touge. maybe it's all in my head but i'll stick with performance over price....i haven't gone second rate on anything else on my car (cept rear tires sometimes) why go cheap on fuel.;)

I believe the tank carries 13 gallons. At least it does on my 93.

Sorry to bring a month-old topic back to the top, but I was running a search about gas and this was exactly what I needed, so I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. ;)

When I had my Probe GT I put premium in, everytime. The car ran great. There was a noticeable difference in the way it ran when there were circumstances where I did have to use regular.

Premium is usually about .20 cents more than reg. I don't see how 20 cents per gallon would make someone THAT hesitant to buy it.

The previous owner of my 240 put in regular...I figured that was the norm and that'd be what I put in. Today was the first time I put gas in it and I decided to go for 89 instead (or "plus" as they call it) although out of habit I first reached for the premium.

As I was filling up, I noticed the little sticker on the fuel door that said premium is recommended. Thus, it looks as though I will continue to be a premium gas consumer, unless I discover that the car doesn't seem to run as well with it.

Chevron with Techron IS good gas. That was all I used when I lived in Oregon...unfortunately here in South Carolina we don't have Chevrons, and I do miss their gas. My Probe ran great with it.

Shell seems to be advertising their gas with what sound like techronish additives now that help keep the fuel system clean. I haven't had any poor experiences using that, either.

If your car runs w/o detonation with 87 or 89 then you get no more hp out of a high octane. The high the octane the higher the burning point of the gas. It has nothing to do with performance. It is all mental. I try to buy my gas w/o ethonal, ethonal can cause condensation, and you don't want water in your fuel. The problem is to get the 92 octane they usually need to put in ethonal to rasie the octane points, but this is really only a problem up north in the winter.

I've read that when you use 93 octane on the new Z you get an extra 9 hp...

Using higher grades of fuel, wont help, UNLESS it's a high compression car(that why I use 93 on my NA Z)All it does is keep detonation from occuring in those situations.I have read nowhere that it is supposed to increase gas mileage...If you think about it, since it adds a small amount of hp to some cars, wouldn't 93 actually decrease gas mileage?

Yeah you saw that article...they dyno'd the new z using 100 octane and 93 octane...

Yeah the S14s recommend 91 octane and up...thats what I get. On certain days by me gas stations lower the price to equal the midgrade...thats when I usually get a full tank.

I'm just wondering...if you guys would mind, how much is premium in your area...I live in Jersey and its about 1.52 per gallon.

Oh yeah and for everyone complaining about the price hike in gas....at least we don't live in europe...
