I am gettting my valves to float at about 6300 RPM. This only seems to happen when I am running in higher boost levels (14psi as opposed to the normal 8psi).The car bogs down, and stumbles and runs rough for few seconds after the valves float. When the valves float, it allows the lash adjusters to pump up with oil, so the engine runs rough until the oil drains out of the lash adjusters and they go down.I am running stock cams and stock valve train(with rocker arm stoppers) on my S13 redtop. The head was professionally ported it has been doing this since day one. I am also running an S15 turbocharger. Some time ago, I greatly improved the valve float problem when I noticed some of the springs were installed upside down, this would lead to premature floating. I fixed all the springs that were upside down, the problem got a LOT better, but it still is there.I am considering new valve springs, probably the COMP ones. Anyone have any other advice? And why doesnt it do this at 8psi boost? Thanks in advance for the input.-AaronPortland, OR

Good to know. I'm running a similar setup with the exception that my motor is S14 SR20det. I have not had the problem you speak of, however I do fear that I have a valve guide seal problem because when going down hill and using the transmission to slow me down, oil gets sucked in and gives out a puff of blue smoke when I suddenly accelerate at the bottom of a hill. Well, at least I hope its a valve guide seal problem and not something else.

I am running an S15 turbo and 13~14psi boost using an HKS actuator.

I was told by someone with tons more experience with SR motors than myself that the valve springs are weak from factory and he suggested much stronger springs (titanium) and while I'm at it, titanium valves, valve guides, seals..etc. He said the valve train is good for stock boost, but once you start throwing more boost at it, funny things start to happen. Keep us updated on how the valve work goes. I'm considering some here in the near future.

Well, I am not sure about your problem, but you dont need to go with titanium valve springs, that seems excessive for a street car. Your car should handle that boost without ease. Maybe oil is getting in through your piston rings, did you do a compression test? If it is your valve stem seals, then a new set is $70, and you can just replace those and save a few hundred $.

Anyway, I shouldnt Hijack my own thread.

I have come to the conclusion that the stock valve springs are worn and weak. This is an old SR, being an S13 redtop, so the springs could easily be 15 years old.It may only be doing the valve floating at lower boost levels because the the cylinder pressures are lower. With more boost, the intake valves have that extra boost pressure from the intake maniflod helping to push them open, maybe this is compounding the problem. So I am going to get some new valve springs, maybe the Brian Crower set from Enjuku. Speak up if you have this problem.
