My starter seems to be going out (I can tap on it to make it work). When it doesnt work, it doesnt even click - nothing hapens when I turn the key. So I tap it gently, and it seems to then fire right up. I've had it 17 months - about 28k miles. Is this way too soon for a starter to fail? It was a remanufactured one.

Check the starter brushes, the same had hapen to me twice in the past 12 years (about every four years) I didn't got the originals so instead cut and grinded other to same size, and the starter is still the original; S13 '93 SE 94K.

Before I take the old one out - is there a way to see if I'll need an 8 or 10 tooth replacement? Just want to know what to order.
